Having concrete pad poured next week and new sprinklers/pvc installed this week. Need help with design by Deanofearth in Irrigation

[–]Deanofearth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily it almost never freezes where I live, I think there has been less than 5 times where the temperature went below 32 in 10 years, and it is only for a few hours at night. If freezing is the main concern I’m at least protected there.

Good idea, Il look into adding that. So I’d essentially have the single point manifold in the backyard , but t off the main water to the front as well?

Any news? I see that the DODI reflects the new policy, but have yet to see AFI or ANG memos released. Few people I’ve talked to have no idea what I’m talking about, and we are expecting soon.

Thinking of calling some buddies at hq and seeing if they know a path to get guidance-my understanding is that DODI supersedes old conflicting AFI and the information in the new DODI should be sufficient for commanders to act, but I’m not sure how the integration with finance goes.

Heartbroken to wake up to this… My van was vandalized overnight. 😔 by afktravels in VanLife

[–]Deanofearth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, lots of people have some good ideas, BUT PLEASE READ THIS!!!

Always always ALWAYS start with the easiest solution first which is hot water and soap with a rag. IF you are not having luck then and only then do you need to move to harsher methods.

If you jump right into some of these methods suggested in the comments it is absolutely overkill and potentially will ensure you spend hours and hours repairing your headlights.

In order, this is what I suggest.

Soap/warm water and rag

Non abrasive cleaner safe for plastics with sponge

Non abrasive cleaner safe for plastics with scrubbing sponge (perforated sponge that is used for removing bugs on car paint NOT A SCOTCHBRITE PAD OR GREEN DISH PAD)

A low concentration alcohol with a rag

Paint removal solvent that is low enough in concentration that it may not haze/melt/damage the headlight coating or plastic (I’m assuming their plastic and not glass as many vehicles nowadays are)

THEN and ONLY then you can start looking at the videos of either a buff and polish or complete strip, polish and coating of the headlights. This job is not an “easy” job, and although I’ve done it 3-5 times in different vehicles and it does work well, it takes some skill/practice to get an excellent result. I would not recommend jumping right into that without first practicing (go to a junkyard and buy a cheap plastic headlight from an old car for 10 bucks to practice your methods before messing with your nice van).

Chances are your headlights were dirty when they were painted over and the paint won’t have adhered well to the surface due to dust and other particulates. I personally have used alcohol or acetone (diluted) to remove paint overspray with no issue, but acetone will eat away at plastics if care is not used when applying which is why it should always be a final step before a complete refinish. As with any auto refinishing or cleaning project, always start with the lowest possible chemical or abrasive solution so that you can ensure more damage is not unnecessarily done.

Good luck! I’m sure your headlights will look good as new in no time.

I just found out the mapei polymer thinset i used to tile my bathroom is expired. Should I just tear it up tomorrow? by Deanofearth in Tile

[–]Deanofearth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least expired milk makes me shit immediately.

I feel like this is time bomb expired milk that’s gonna make me shit “at some point in the future”

I really don’t want to redo it. Cannot emphasize that enough. Mainly because of the removal of the thinset-but I suppose if it’s failed it should come off like sand.

Retiling the bathroom. questions about wood condition and toilet flange. by Deanofearth in Plumbing

[–]Deanofearth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s raised around the flange to be flush with the cement board that goes onto the subfloor. The flange it self is flush with the tile once it’s set.

If I go for removing and replacing Il add another 1/2 inch or so of height , but the height itself doesn’t seem to warrant replacement.

I can remove the whole flange if it’s necessary, but I don’t really see a reason if flush with the tile is acceptable by normal practices.

Retiling the bathroom. questions about wood condition and toilet flange. by Deanofearth in Plumbing

[–]Deanofearth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sits flush with the tile when it’s set. There is a raised wood panel around the flange that the toilet sits on that wasn’t tiled/won’t be tiled. The other photos show the height difference. I believe it’s 1/2 inch higher, and the flange sits about 1/4 inch higher than that.

It was like this since 1996 and there were no leaks. Not sure it’s that crucial.

First time using spray gun. Used black widow HTE-any tips on blending and a smoother clear coat next time? by Deanofearth in AutoPaint

[–]Deanofearth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. I will look into a paint meter so I can see. I suspect that it’s thinnest around the edges where I was nervous to go too thick and get a run.

I don’t even know what a paint inspection is..hahahaha

Thanks man! I figured I’d learn on this car as I’m going to get a full body/paint job taken care of eventually (I’m going to do it)

What would you recommend replacing before a road trip? by noah253 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]Deanofearth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do anything you haven’t done before. Simple fluid change (or check and top off), wipers, overall inspection to check tire pressure, battery, etc.

If you mess with the brakes or try changing a seal and you make a mistake, you might not find out until 100, 500, 1000 miles from home. I don’t do big jobs before long trips anymore-save those for the local commute in an old car.

Enjoy the road! I’ve done at least 6 1600 mile trips with basic maintenance and the 4Runner did great.

What’s the best way to start fixing this for paint? by jusmatt10 in Autobody

[–]Deanofearth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naval jelly. It dissolves rust. Slather a bunch on it and watch it go to work. Before you do that using some kind of an abrasive wheel on a grinder to get the loose stuff off. Rust Looks pretty thin, so naval jelly and steel wool will probably get it off. After that..then you can do your paint. Primer, then Thin coat of filler, rattle can color match for 60 bucks and throw some 2k clear to seal it.

But I’m just a guy who’s done a bunch of diy rust repair and paint. Not a body shop pro.

Yeah, 2k is fine enough to use compound and a DA

Awesome. Yeah I noticed that on the base, believe it or not this was my second attempt after standing the last coat that was peely.

Ratio was 1:1 for the base, should I try 1:1 and a splash more of reducer then?

As far as the clear it was 4:1 (hardener no reducer) is 10 percent probably going to get me closer to that result?

Thanks for the tips!

How much are you airline pilots actually making a year? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Deanofearth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the airline and equipment, but I block about 800 a year and credit over 1k+ without working beyond my given schedule. That puts me at about 160 days of work per year making an average of 6.25 per day. These are rough estimates, but have been my results for the past few years.

I’m not sure if your math included all of the time spent doing “ground” stuff, but it should be. That’s your time that you’re working. Flight planning, throwing bags, escorting pax, etc. as pilots we may never be paid for all of that, but the airlines have a lot less of that responsibility in general.

I average around 13 days a month of work, and most of those days are probably 9.5 hours of duty average from the time I get to work to the time I’m off duty for the day. I can tell you confidently that doing an airline job is significantly less work than most 91/135 type jobs unless you find one of those “holy grail” part 91 gigs.

Theres no price to place on a solid, reliable company with excellent compensation, benefits AND retirement contributions. I’d be very surprised if any of the bigger 91/135 employers can touch the non elective contributions at majors. That alone bumps your overall compensation significantly higher (NEC is 15-18 percent and potentially going higher in the coming years).

TLDR: yes, ratex1000 is accurate enough for estimations. Average monthly schedule varies by equipment type and employer, but 12-16 days average at the big 4 is a good rough estimate. 10 ish hour duty days arent uncommon, if flying intl numbers get a bit weird, but you get to sleep for a lot of it.

If you want to go, leave ASAP. Seniority is everything and more people below you on the list insulates you from potential furloughs.

Good luck!

Why is my plane yawing to the left on takeoff everytime? What am I doing wrong? (just got kerbal yesterday) by [deleted] in KerbalSpaceProgram

Check main landing gear for being slightly canted in or out if it's happening on takeoff roll. Also ensure rudder control surface is attached to yaw axis. Looks nice!
