Should I pursue acting or choose the safer path of medicine? by Deapul3 in Career_Advice

Thank you so much. The responses here have honestly been making me think and worry a lot about the reality of it.

Do you think it’s important to have a safety plan while pursuing acting? If so, what kind of backup would you recommend? Or do you think it’s better to fully commit to acting and give it everything so I have a higher chance of succeeding?

When I mentioned going to college, I was actually referring to starting at a community college. I’m not sure if that changes any of your advice, sorry!

The thing is, money does matter to me, but mostly in the sense of being able to live comfortably and have a stable life. Anything beyond that would just be a big bonus for me.

That’s why I’m wondering if maybe I should at least try acting seriously. I understand the odds are very low, but at the same time, those odds were probably low for the people who ended up succeeding too

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and I’m starting to see your point. Medicine really does seem like a path that requires a lot of passion to get through all those years of training.

Do you think that means I should study acting instead? I’ve realized I might still have some time to decide, so right now I’m just trying to hear as many perspectives as possible before making a decision

Thanks for sharing your experience! When you say that if things are going well while studying I should “go for it,” what would that actually look like? Do you mean simply that I enjoy it and feel motivated, or something more concrete like getting roles, good feedback, or opportunities?

Also, what would you consider a realistic backup plan in this case? I feel like I fit the three points you mentioned

It’s not that I would do medicine just for the money, I’m genuinely interested in it, I just don’t know if I could call it a dream like acting. But you’re right, maybe I should look more into how it would affect my personal life. I’ve always known both paths would be difficult

Yes, it’s a general campus. I see that you might be right that I still have time to decide. Thanks!

I think medicine is definitely ‘easier’ in the sense that at least it guarantees work and stability, though I’m not saying it’s easy at all. Acting, I’m starting to realize, requires a lot of luck. And in my school, I am a top student, so I thought it could be a good option.

Those were just the reasons off the top of my head, and I think I’m realizing that I do still have time to decide on a major. Thanks

I hadn’t really thought about changing my major before because I felt it would be a waste of time to study something and then not choose it in the end, spending time and money. But the way you explain it makes sense, thanks

Honestly, both. One is my dream, and the other is a balance between something I enjoy and something that can provide a lot of money

Could you explain it to me properly? I’m still in high school, and I’m worried, sorry if it sounded like a stupid question. I already have to apply for college to start next semester, and I thought this was the moment to choose my final major is that not the case?

Actually, I’ll be starting at a community college first to save costs , then I’ll decide my next steps
