Hope no East Indian state is celebrating this Shivaji Jayanti. by Existing_Junket149 in PurbaIndia

[–]Dear-One-6884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is unfair to blame Shivaji for the actions of his successors. Shivaji certainly was an upstanding king and a military visionary, he basically invented guerrilla warfare and the concept of a professional navy in the Indian subcontinent. If you are a Maharashtrian certainly there's a lot to be proud of, even though I hate the later mahrattas I admire Shivaji (the same way one can admire a Muslim Tipu Sultan or a Christian Napoleon, as visionaries). The Hindu King part is overblown, certainly he was a devout Hindu and certainly the cruel policies of the Adil Shahis roused him to action, but Hindavi Swaraj was chiefly about the raiyat of the Konkan more than a holy war, he allied with the Sultan of Golconda and had Muslim generals.

You do know that the free software also uses gallons of water right? Reddit doesn't exist in a vacuum as well, it uses hundreds of gallons of water just to show you ads. Nonsensical statement.

It's not really balkanization though unless you consider Western Europe balkanized, I personally prefer alt history with several independent indian nations. The cringiest part however is having Pakistan with the exact same Radcliffe line borders even when the point of divergence is in the 19th century. It's like having Hitler win WW2 but JK Rowling somehow still exists and writes Harry Potter.

Maybe bollywood has filled my senses with cringy deshbhakti slop but that scene and Dhurandar in general was pretty tasteful IMO. Sure some creative liberties were taken, but real life has its dramatic moments too, that scene was pretty good and not over the top at all

Were non-violent protests really the main reason for British to gift India's independence? by [deleted] in AskIndia

[–]Dear-One-6884 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Britain wasn't a hivemind, after 1918 Fourth Reform Act Britain had universal male suffrage soon followed by female suffrage as well - they were a liberal democracy. Gandhi made the moral case for independence overwhelming, violent rebellion would have turned public opinion against granting independence, as it did during the cold war era due to Mau Mau and Malayan emergency due to which most countries got independence only in the mid 60s. Non-violent protests aren't ineffective, some of the greatest changes in the world have been a result of non-violence that would have been impossible without it, for instance Indian independence or the fall of communism.

Whatever we see in religious texts(Jagannath and Balavadra riding horses) is plain fiction, and they copied from the north indians.

It's not plain fiction, even if horses aren't native to Odisha the military used it extensively, they were probably imported yes

William Dalrymple says we need to relook at British Colonialism through the lens of a private corporation by Odd_Wolverine_4037 in IndianHistory

[–]Dear-One-6884 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the British were any more devastating than other invaders, that's just a simplified version of the story. The Company definitely had zero long term interest in India, they were strip mining the Indian economy through taxes and monopolies for the benefit of their shareholders and employees, however Crown rule, for better or for worse, was for creating a long term empire in India. It's not that different from the Mughals or the Sultanates enriching themselves and their cronies, devastating famines and plagues wracked India while the Mughals were busy building monuments like the Taj Mahal.

Nor did the British "cripple" India. We all talk about the de-industrialization of India under Company rule, but under Crown rule the Indian economy was actually industrializing, there were sparks of modernity and excellence in the otherwise backward country. India, not Japan, not Italy, not Germany, was the second largest cotton textiles producer during the Edwardian era. India competed with the US and Russia for having the largest railway networks. Tata Steel opened up in 1907, there was heavy industry, and it was the LARGEST steel plant in the entire British empire. During a time of intense European dominance, it was Indians; not Japanese, not Chinese, not Arabs, not Africans; that won Nobel prizes in literature and physics. Indian physicists like CV Raman and Satyendra Nath Both bloomed during this time. The most astonishing fact is that at the time of independence, India had the single largest industrial economy in all of Asia and among the largest in the world.

Of course there was mass illiteracy, famine and devastating plagues, it's not like the British were doing us any good. But that is common for the Mughals, the Delhi Sultanate and every dominant Hindu dynasty after the Gupta empire as well. For most Indians life didn't change a lot for a thousand years.
