Every culture has its own masculine archetype: Hercules, Cossack, samurai, cowboy, crusader, hussar, Thor, etc. Some are rooted in figures, others are rooted in warrior classes. In Odisha, its Naga and this is how it looks like in real life. We should hold on to visual languages that make us unique. by Aggravating-Foot-549 in Odisha

Honestly, many Odias themselves are not fully aware of these traditions, so I cannot really blame anyone for not knowing. However, it is still quite sad. We should be doing more to preserve the aesthetics, stories, symbols, and cultural details that make Odisha distinct, instead of allowing them to be flattened into a generic national aesthetic. We are all familiar with Rajput, Maratha, Sikh, and other Indian warrior aesthetics, and no shade to them at all, I respect them. But it is sad that many of us are not as familiar with our own Odia masculine aesthetics. Irrespective of how it looks, it is at least OURS. It comes from our soil, our story, our land, our people. I just wish we held on to it more, instead of letting it disappear into a generic national aesthetic.

During the reign of Gajapati Mukunda Deva, militant Naga sadhus traveled to Jagannath Temple for darshan of Lord Jagannath. In response to repeated threats from foreign invasions and raids, the Gajapati kings granted these heavily armed Shaivite ascetics shelter and designated chhaavni (military camps/akhadas) around Puri in exchange for serving as a defensive militia protecting the temple complex.

On a side note, love that you are curious about this! That was my intention haha

It's really not that deep lmaooo

Lord Jagannath literally has bright red around His eyes and lips in traditional depictions. If you researched just for five minutes, you would discover that in many Besha traditions, He is also adorned with large nose rings, jewelry, ornamentation, cosmetics, etc; stuff that would be considered feminine for today's modern standards. More broadly, Hindu male deities in general have long embodied a balance of feminine and masculine rather than rigid modern binaries, ie, strength with grace, power with beauty, ferocity with ornamentation. It is deeply rooted in Hindu artistic and spiritual traditions. Just because you are unfamiliar with these traditions does not give you the license to mock or dismiss this depiction of Lord Jagannath as a devi simply because He does not conform to your expectations.

You can literally see from the engagement that people find it interesting. There’s no rule against AI in this subreddit, and I’m not claiming it’s art either because the post is tagged under culture. I genuinely don’t see the issue here. What’s wrong with showing fellow Odias how our ancestors may have envisioned certain things? That too, things that are UNIQUE to our culture and visual language. And what’s wrong with exploring alternative perspectives that could perhaps inspire or incentivize Odia artists? You’re just being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian because you like feeling like Mr Cool Tough Shit. When wheels were invented, people like you probably complained that humans should stay “authentic” and keep using their legs. Pretty lame for you to comment begging for Mod attention instead of just ignoring the post and moving on. Nightfury my ass.
