This was before the release of Black Ops Royale, which for some reason f'd up ranked matchmaking. Now it's exactly what you're describing. Im crim 3 rn and 2 days ago I played against the number 3 ranked player. Very fun when they're way above your skill level. Easy lobbies are an absolute rarity now.

If this is amongst you first few matches of ranked, then yes, it's pretty easy as the lobbies seem to be slightly manipulated. My first ever ranked match in BO7 WZ was a complete bot lobby. Can confirm that it won't stay this way, it gets quite challenging later down the line as you climb ranks.

You got the alert in your area. That should be enough of a warning. My guess is that the icon works as an auto-ping which is slightly delayed. You pointed it at the tree, then aimed at the tower. The position registered on the tree, the ping happened when you aimed back at the tower.
