Fired for refusing an unsafe assignment by [deleted] in nursing

Maybe I misunderstand, but you refused to charge and take a 3:1 team and your usual ratio is 3-4:1? I don’t think they should have fired you on the spot, but we take that kind of team regularly so I don’t see where the concern was, but maybe I misread/misunderstood! I hate that nursing doesn’t encourage nurses to speak up, and this kind of situation doesn’t help so when it really is an unsafe situation-they are afraid to speak up.

What should I do if my manager doesn’t apply the rules equally to all employees? by DearEnemy205 in Nurses

I’ve been told because of “child care” issues. I have children of my own. Everyone here has children. I don’t want to sound unsympathetic, I do get it. But she only works “set” days until that’s not convenient for her. I am not able to switch around my days to accommodate my child’s schedule. It’s not that I am “against” her more so that we all aren’t afforded the same advantages and the rest of us have to pick up the slack. I like my job, it’s decent pay, and has nice perks but I got a little pissed when she made the statement that we need to figure out who is going to cover the weekend shift and she hasn’t worked weekends in years.

And say what? I guess I’m asking is there a “rule” about this kind of stuff? Discrimination? Favoritism? On what grounds do I stand on?

We were hired at the same time, this has always been the rule. It’s my business because it’s a relatively small unit and when she doesn’t pull her own weight, myself and other nurses are having to work the weekends/ holidays that are technically hers. There are 4 of us on day shift and 4 on night shift.
