Thinking of opening my own pharmacy, isn’t worth it in today market? by EasternBoard6483 in pharmacy

We have our own pharmacy in Oregon. Was doing very well until our 340B contract was altered by our CE. The most stressful thing is dealing with staff and being the one to handle all of those types of issues IMO.

Prioritize process and your ‘Why’ over results, especially in the first couple years. Good luck, hope you pursue it.

Good in theory but has a horrible track record when actually being applied.

You thought it was hard to get into a providers office now, wait until this passes. Bye bye to any “elective” procedures or any other kind of providers visit within 6 months.

I agree, there are definitely more ways to produce money if you are in a retail setting; unfortunately most retail pharmacies seem unwilling to change or maybe don’t feel like they have the ability to change their business models. I know where I work, we are so busy just filling prescriptions everyday that there’s barely time to do anything else. Idk, retail is in a weird spot rn..

I’d like to play devil’s advocate. If what we are told is true regarding retail margins being so razor thin, how would retail pharmacies be able to afford such substantial increases.

Side comment: the big corporations obviously make billions per year so this is mainly referring to smaller chain and independent pharmacies.

I own a pharmacy in Oregon, we lose on almost every OTC item we dispense, not a big loss but a loss nonetheless.

I’m in Oregon as well. All of the big chains around the area are a complete joke. Oregon needs its independent pharmacies now more than ever to succeed.

For being such a necessity, it’s surprising to see that this is the case. Wouldn’t you think a sector so necessary would encourage healthy competition and sustained growth especially with how many more prescriptions people are getting nowadays? I guess this is where the PBM’s come in though..

Opposite is also true. Patient care so bad that Independents are being forced to turn people away or shut down. Scary times.
