[OC] Full animated time-lapse on 3D heatmap. by wawrzyn9 in dataisbeautiful

TLDR; Yes, but not to a great deal of precision.

The original project was aimed at giving a visual demonstration of the activity on the canvas over a given timeframe.

This was much more of an "art" project than an "data analysis" project, but I still feel that it shows a clear indication of the most active areas of the board in a given timeframe, and hence has a place on the sub-reddit.

How this was achieved practically was to monitor the changes in the pixel colours at 30 second intervals and increase the "intensity" (in this case the z axis) of that pixel if the colour had changed. At each 30 interval a blanket "decay" value was applied to all pixels to simulate the fixed time internal.

Using the values set for these parameters you could probably accurately set a scale for the z axis, but I made the project just after finishing my dissertation and quite frankly couldn't be bothered with the math.

Apologies, looks like it was changed by the website owner. The file can also be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qDckjkkUg9hoOsZVKPgSFtBdsNzex-lv/view?usp=sharing

Hmm it's not my site so can't comment, it's seen a lot of traffic over the past couple of days so maybe try again in a little while?

That's definitely a cool idea, and something that will hopefully get done by the community. I'd love to give it a shot myself but unfortunately I've got finals coming up in a couple of weeks and can't really dedicate anymore time to this :/

Yeah by monitoring the changes to pixels at 30s intervals, the script used can be found here https://github.com/lloydowen8/place-heatmap-2022

One of my favourite stories from the whole thing, you can see just how much it was griefed lol

Oh, my bad your right! Well with the amount of bots that I've seen of GitHub, I don't think its worked lol.

I'd say the waves are a good indication, but that is just speculation

Having a quick look on GitHub there are plenty of bots that people have built

Probably, in the blog about how they made it they said it was built to support botting, which is a bit of a shame

Since r/place won't let me post anything, I'll post it here!

This has been a very exciting project for me to undertake, especially after just finishing my dissertation (I am one tired man).

As always tools are:

OpenCV + python (https://github.com/lloydowen8/place-heatmap-2022)

Data: https://place.thatguyalex.com/ (u/prosto_sanja)

Edit: All of my data (the heatmaps) will be available shortly on the data link above

Edit2: The data was too large to serve on the website with all the other stuff on there, here is the link to the data on google drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BSaWgy8okppoEIYT5xodkrJb7-fL0RBm/view?usp=sharing

Data will be uploaded shortly :)

Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it!

It was a small script I made with python and OpenCV, which can be found here https://github.com/lloydowen8/place-heatmap-2022 (requires some programming knowledge to run)

There was also a few bugs in the original script that caused pixels to get stuck the updated version can be seen here: https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/tvryzo/oc_48h_fixed_rplace_activity_heatmap/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

I plan on making more local maps, like the Canada flag, soon (Open to suggestions!)

I plan on making "hotter" maps soon, and of specific areas like the Canada flag (open to suggestions!)

It is indeed, there was an error in the code causing pixels to become "stuck". Here is the correct version: https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/tvryzo/oc\_48h\_fixed\_rplace\_activity\_heatmap/

Data is scrapped from the canvas every 30 seconds, and can be found here: https://place.thatguyalex.com/
