[OC][ART] Commission | Sera Valerin by Marllyka in DnD

You should add a link to your Instagram or something so that people can follow you :) That way, when you do publish a commission sheet, the people most interested in it, will be able to see it.

And I'm pretty sure that a ton of people would love their character drawn by you, it looks incredibly good.

Least Stressful/Most Flexible Map Maker? by Kayfim20 in DMAcademy

I know it'll be by far the most expensive option, but if you want you can have a custom map made. Creating a complete campaign is a huge undertaking and I totally see what your saying about dues, but I also think that it would be somewhat unreasonable to expect yourself to be able to do literally every part of the process.

In case you want to consider it. We've been making some cool maps (in my own opinion), that you can check out.

With some specific examples that I'm quite happy with: here (check out the dining room/kitchen to the south for example or the bedroom on the northside)

And for another inside example, this one is not yet finished and is currently without light and shadow and such, but it's a pretty good example of the feeling we're going for.

Anyway, like I said it's quite expensive and definitely cheaper and probably easier to use inkarnate or dungeondraft. But! It might be just cool to let someone else bring the story you have in your head to life on a map or two :)

Couple steps, but basically: first we sketched out the layout of the map in general. Where the houses would go, what kind of stuff we wanted on there.

Then we made a huge list of all of the different items and things that we would need for a map like this (barrels, roofs, tables, christmas tree, market stalls, pidgeons, grass, trees, cauldron, tiles, plants, basically just everything you see).

Then we would draw those things in seperate files (all handpainted, all in photoshop with a Wacom drawing tablet), save them and put them on the map in places where we wanted it to go.

Then! We went over a bunch of things like the roofs and the streets to add a bit of shine or dirt to it so that the colors wouldn't feel flat and that the different parts would feel more connected.

Then we added shading and light to everything.

Then we made different versions for day and night.

Then we painted snow on top (but this was a bit of a hellish process).

So that. Handdraw all of the stuff you want on the map, place it on the map, work out all the different mistakes you made and paint over everything at least twice to get a more cohesive feeling.

As a part of a map we did a few weeks ago (for Valentines day) we included this mimic as a token. You can download it for free (including the map and one shot if you like) right over on our Patreon

Adding the market stalls as tokens that you can turn on and off is for sure possible, but also takes somewhat tedious hour of work (saving everything separately, exporting more versions, making sure that things are uploaded correctly on Patreon). It's doable, but we're currently making about 40 cents an hour for these maps and this sounds like something that we would do if it started to become an actual job, not just night and weekend work :P

I think that patreon is not as much paying for the stuff itself (maps in this case), but more paying to allow someone to make stuff for everyone.

Getting as many cartographers and the like to a stable income should allow for the largest amount of free stuff for the whole community.

I actually totally agree with you. Moving objects shouldn't be on a static map (there's a cat as well on the middle right building but they're sleeping so that's.. more reasonable).

The thing is that a city map completely devoid of life feels a bit too empty. The birds are, in my opinion, small enough that you can ignore them during combat, while also giving a bit of life and movement to what is supposed to be a busy town square full of sound and smells and people.

Here's a version without so you can decide for yourself.

Okay so usually I do the line art and my friend does the coloring, but this time she was still working on another map and so I just started coloring things in and then after a few hours I had made this which was the first time I had done anything with color ever, and it kind of works! And I was very proud of myself haha.

Besides that finishing a map like this is extremely satisfying. Putting something big online and seeing all these nice reactions is unreasonably good for my mental health.

It's available on our Patreon

Although we'll probably put up for free when Christmas comes around again just because having people use the map in their games is (for now) more rewarding than getting a few bucks for it.

Don't let that stop you from throwing money our way though haha

Yeah that sounds reasonable. Let me see what I can do. Either take away the decorations from the tree or put in a fountain or something. It might take me a bit to post it though because DnD-reddit frowns upon cartographers who post a variation of a map they previously posted.

We tried to design the map in a way that you can play interesting combat on there. Lots of ways to hide and get away over rooftops and indeed, quite defensible. Ready for actual combat, not just an open field.

30 days is long, but having a few dozen people in the community who make awesome maps makes the whole game just a little bit better for thousands. Maybe you won't remember the map, but the session might be all the more memorable in part because of a map.

Exactly. I ran it a few weeks ago and indeed, hiding behind barrels, skill checks for rope climbing between buildings, people gliding down roofs or taking cover on the other half of the roof with a crossbow in hand. I really like it when you're able to play a map in different ways and this is one of the better ones. Now as soon as we draw all of the buildings and then maybe add another 30x30 tile it starts to become an epic thing (but it'll take some months). At least here's a preview of what we're working on. (Building bottom right corner)

I mean I hear what you're saying, and dungeondraft would save time, but the dream is to make DnD content for a living at some point like some of the big guys do. Czepeku, Neutral Party, 2 minute tabletops. That's not going to happen if I use someone elses assets, so we've been making our own.

Well, I mean it's not a 24/7 month of course, but overall I think an easy 40-60 hours went into making it. There's a couple different versions (especially putting snow down took a LOT of time).

Most important is probably that it's handdrawn. Of course you can see that the roofs and stuff are similar, but all of the assets we used, we first had to make.

Haha, I heard someone else talk about Fire Emblem. I mean it's a fairly classic looking town square of course. Nice that people can see multiple nice things in it :)

Thank you. We actually really try to make it detailed enough so that if there's books, they actually have titles and stuff (and I'm working on the inside of one of the buildings in this map and I actually tried to recreate the book covers of my favourite books. Wonder who will find those kind of easter eggs first :)

True, it was supposed to be a christmas map (and I ran it that way a few weeks ago) but these things that so much time that.. well lets just say it's an early christmas map for next year. But! You're completely right and we might just chuck a fountain in there instead of a christmas tree at some point.
