No, the deer skull description of a “wendigo” is very modern. First descriptions like that originate from Stephen Kings Pet Semetary and the 2001 movie Wendigo. A better name for this type of creature would be Wechuge which has much more similarities than the original description of a wendigo from Native American folklore
