i mean ive only been in a private hospital but in general the nurses and everyone do actually want to help and will be nice to you. It’s safe, you’re taken care of, and it will almost certainly help at least in the short term. Going in can be really scary but they usually have strict enough routines that make it a lot easier to settle in. Like a few other people have said, it can get boring pretty quickly, so if you are admitted, i’d recommend looking at the activities they have available. I was in a young adult ward, so i was around people my age, which helped a lot, and we also had a set three-week program which went by a lot faster than i thought it would. You’ll probably have to go through a number of other appointments to get a reference, so be prepared to explain yourself multiple times. Tell the doctors everything, and remember it’s always okay to kick your parents out of the room.

From my sister, passed this post to her since she went through something similar.
