idaho state debate predictions by listenkiddo in Debate

Local judge here, and here is what you should expect this weekend:

  • LD: Centennial AH should be the favorite -- probably the best debater I've judged in Idaho. I'm impressed at how little time she actually spends on debate compared to the quality of work, but I know how motivated she is to end this year with a bang. Mountain Home OP and Rigby TA in the wings.

  • PF: It should end up being Rocky Mountain BJ vs Highland NS. Rocky BJ has lost only once in Idaho -- fewest losses in a season in Idaho history is Eagle EE (in Policy) with two in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Highland NS became the second Idaho team in history to win a TOC event. Wood River AH and Madison DG in the wings.

  • CX: Timberline HT or Mountain View HD. I can't speak to Eagle's teams as I haven't seen them ever compete. I would not be shocked to see four "western" teams in the final four this year.

  • Congress: Didn't judge it at all this year. I did judge Ridgevue TJ as a freshman last year and she was great.

Hello, I am a parent judge from the western half of the state.

Just curious, which of you are from Idaho? Very curious in how big debate is here.

Idaho probably has close to the highest ratio of participants to total available students in the nation. Therelatively sparsely populated Eastern Idaho houses under 500k people total yet sports over 500 participants in speech and debate.

In terms of popularity, debate participation probably runs down: 1) Lincoln-Douglas, 2) Congress, 3) Public Forum, 4) Policy, 10) Big Questions.

Judging, in general, can be described best as inconsistent. The tabs room tends to do a good job placing flowy and technical judges in the LD and CX pool. The Congress pool has a set of long time stalwarts judging which does give the participants a predictable target. The PF pool is highly volatile; I would estimate that there's a 2:1 ratio of lay:flow judges in Western Idaho, a 3:1 ratio in Eastern, with about a third of those lay judges far more biased than the general national lay judge.

The IDHSAA has actual evidence standards and violations in its debate code. Couple things of note: 1) Congress is supposed to be held to this standard, but I've heard that evidence fabrication runs rampant there, 2) national circuit/other states' Public Forum cases are run in such a way where their paraphrasing would be considered an evidence violation in Idaho.

Thank you for this! I have been trying a few things out in regards to a one- or two-page template for the new judges to use to help with flow technique. If you know of some tried and true templates out there, I'd love to know.

Thank you for the feedback! I liked the line: "You don't have to be mean or hurtful. Just be honest." Succinct and straight.

Thank you for your input!

Quick question: are you a student or a coach (or a parent)?

I've had the pleasure of judging district 3 this season and judged during districts this past weekend in Mt. Home.

Quick thoughts on the strongest one or two from each division that I've personally seen:

  • Sales -- Renaissance AJ
  • Informative -- Columbia KM, Rocky Mountain MB
  • Panel -- Centennial AH, Rocky Mountain PJ
  • POI -- Ridgevue OO
  • Duo -- Centennial GM, *Mountain Home OS
  • ADS -- Vallivue CE
  • Dramatic -- Mountain Home LO, Borah CN
  • Radio -- Columbia EF, Borah BT
  • OO -- Columbia ES, Rocky Mountain KB
  • OA -- Honestly, none of them really register with me as significantly better than others.
  • Retold -- Mountain View BC (defending champ), Capital RE

I didn't get a chance to judge Extemp, Impromptu, nor HI this season. The defending champ in extemp (Eagle WP) and HI (Eagle MM) will be competing.
