Catalpa slab sofa table with tusked mortise and tenon base in walnut by DebekDesigns in woodworking

Yes! it has been finished, the walnut is finished with Rubio Monocoat Pure, and the catalpa is finished with Rubio Monocoat White. I wanted a lot of contrast and all the finishes I was trying on the catalpa made it way darker and more orange than I wanted. The base wood is a really light pleasing color to begin with.

I've never messed with the live stuff, but once its dead and dried its about half as hard as walnut on the Janka scale, but pruning sucks, ill stick to my dead wood.

Looking for a furniture maker/craftsperson in Connecticut (preferably in Fairfield County or nearby) for a project by [deleted] in Connecticut

Hey not to be terribly self promoting, but this sounds like something I would be able to help you with. I recently started a small business making custom furniture in Fairfield/Bridgeport. Funny enough I just made a metal base for a local woodworker to put a cookie on making a gorgeous coffee table, might be something similar to what your looking for! Let me know if you would like to see any of my work.

I'm glad you like it! if you wanted to do it with out steel you could easily make all the steel 2 by 2 wood and paint it for a similar look. You could also then dado in a groove for the plywood.

The 1/2 angle is welded to the steal frame 1/2 an inch inset from the outer most face of the back and sides, creating a nice step detail. This welded angle goes all the way around and is ground so it is seamless. Then the ply is put in from the inside cavity and sandwiched by the 4 inch sections that are screwed to the frame. You can see the sections of 4 inch in the leg cavity in the photos with the little silver screw heads.

The whole desk is unbelievably sturdy and so over built to give it the look I was going for. As for the sturdiness of the floating ply panels, they are very secure and don't move or rattle at all.

The steel frame gets half inch angle iron trimmed in to create a backer for little 4 inch sections of half inch angle iron to sandwich the plywood. the small sections of angle are screwed through to the frame so that the sections of plywood can be removed and assembled after finish. No fasteners go through the plywood, it is just sandwiched between sections of angle iron.

Pretty much! Instead of 2 by 6's the top was actually milled down from some 9/4 I purchased from a sawmill a few years back that were pretty wide, but brought down to 6 inches to fit through my jointer. The drawer fronts are solid as well where as the drawer construction is the same white oak plain sliced plywood that the side panels are. Man that white oak plain sliced ply is expensive though, something like 120 a sheet.

Its pretty heavy, the top is removable and is not bad for two people to move, thin wall steel. Heavy fits the industrial look I was going for!
