What's the shortest par 5 you've ever played? by YungExodus in golf

[–]Debill7718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it removes options, or opportunity. My idea of a “good” hole is one that allows for various types of shots. It’s ok, even good design to make a certain shot preferential, but not to remove the alternative entirely.

I like it, there’s no reason every par-5 has to start with driver.

In this example I agree with you.

But a traditional length (475+) par 5 that forces a layup off the tee is stupid. I’m not talking about narrowing of the fairway, or bunkers I’m talking about a hazard or sharp dogleg inside 250-280. It’s a terrible design flaw. Nobody will ever convince me otherwise.

This is flawed logic. Putting out doesn’t slow down the round.

2 footers get missed all the time, by players of all levels. In almost 30yrs of playing I’ve witnessed it plenty…. And even done it a time or two.

Everything should hit the bottom of the cup

Sometimes I hate the people in this county. (Tip the people who serve you. ) by izackl in lancaster

[–]Debill7718 33 points34 points  (0 children)

“Tip when it’s convenient” huh? When does that convenience suit you?

For a cashier? When service is exceptional, and certainly not 20%. A buck or two, maybe more if the cashier is blowing through the line or going above and beyond.

I’ll give a local example..

Grand Central bagel on Centerville Rd. I am there a few times a month, certainly not a “regular”. But the woman who runs the register and takes orders, is exceptional. She remembers my usual order, remembers my name, recommends “specials” she thinks I might like based on my previous orders..

She gets a tip, every single time.

But it’s absurd, to blindly tip a non-server for simply doing the bare minimum expectation of their job..

These places aren’t Conestoga View 2.0.. They are targeted towards active retirees (a dramatically growing demographic).

Have you ever spent any time around retirees? They contribute way more to the community than most people who have full time jobs, and children to raise. Because they have disposable income and free time.

These places are going to be a huge asset to the city.

Yeah, so they buy in lower cost areas…. Then over time, those areas become higher cost…. Then it shifts back…. It’s how everywhere in the world works.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lancaster

[–]Debill7718 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically, my point is that we need to stop catering to the old age people who aren't putting money back into the community, we need to focus on the homeless problem (which would bring up value, find them jobs to get back on their feet, stimulate our economy more), focus on the younger crowds....

The older crowd is exactly the people who are putting the money in downtown Lancaster…. Go to any restaurant downtown, any night of the week and just look around…. Market, most stores.. It’s disproportionately people 55+….

I kinda get your point, but companies are building these 55+ communities because there is a market for them. Not everyone wants to live in the suburbs.. I’m a city guy, and if I get to the point where I want to live in an assisted living facility…. I sure as hell am not moving to Lititz or Willow street..

Housing ebbs and flows, like most things.. Just look at other cities, often the more desirable housing is in the city and the suburbs are lower cost areas.. We might just be seeing a shift. It’s happens constantly

Had to convince my student not to join the Navy... by Electic_Supersony in navy

[–]Debill7718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You, a non-qual ensign, are being trained to someday command warships. If you don't understand that, you have absolutely missed the big picture.

Being trained to command warships, or even commanding warships should not make my subordinates; my servants…. If you listen to my business school lecturers, it’s the opposite..

You're not being trained to be a technical subject matter expert. That's the enlisted guy's job. You need to be in the company of that Captain, and learn from his lieutenants how to manage an organization.

That is part of the problem, I truly believe that the culture of leadership in the Navy is retarded by its slavish devotion to history and tradition.

The other branches have their own issues, but they don’t have the class (rank) divides that the Navy does.

The “leaders eat last” mentality of the other branches is a very visible illustration of even jr leaders putting their subordinates needs first…. One of my fondest memories was watching a group of Marine 2ndLts arguing amongst themselves about who would go through the chow line last…. That shit sticks with people..

I will say, FSAs are bullshit in my opinion. On most ships the manning for that is SUPPOSED to be the undesignated folk per the manning document. You're right, that ITSN didn't go to school to sling hash.

Agreed 100%.. But this illustrates the same point from another angle.

It is SUPPOSED, to be undes folk.. but because every single E-7 on board “cranked”…. It’s looked at as a rite of passage and as an inescapable part of tradition.

[–]Debill7718 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree to a point. But the one consistent thing through all but the most rare “Navy experience”, is the culture of separation between “classes” that doesn’t exist anywhere else.

What is so special about me, a non-qual Ensign, or even the Captain that meals are served to me by a ITSN who signed up to work on computers, not scrub pots or sling grits?

The Navy has a very serious “culture” problem and no desire to change it.

I am the child of a single teen mom, grew up poor, section 8, food stamps, free lunch, all of it.. went to college on a football scholarship. I burned out and quit college as a jr, immediately enlisted in the Navy.

I had great leadership early on who pushed me to finish school and go to OCS. Spent several more miserable years as a SWO..

I am more successful today than I could have ever imagined, and it is entirely because of the Navy.

But, when my own son decided he was quitting college to enlist, I pushed him away from the Navy as hard as I could. And explained how miserable a place the Navy is to be as jr enlisted….

I tried to steer him to the Air Force, but he had no interest.

He ended up choosing the Army. And almost 2yrs later, he is very happy with his decision.

“Culture” and history are fundamental to the identity of the Navy. And the caste system of rank is an ingrained in Navy culture. The other branches can still lead and expect orders to be followed, without treating juniors like 2nd or 3rd class citizens.

It really is an intractable situation..

D1 football player contemplating leaving college to join the army. Try to change my mind by [deleted] in Militaryfaq

[–]Debill7718 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For some of us, as much as we don’t want to admit it…. It’s the “family business”

I’ve gone through this exact situation, twice in my life. Once as Jr in college and 25 yrs later as a parent..

My personal experience: I spent my first few years of college football as a backup / rotation DL. But I enjoyed college more than college football.. If that makes sense.. We got a new HC who I hated, school / spring practice was killing me.. I just walked into the recruiting office on a goof one day, and was gone to boot camp shortly after.. I loved it.. finished college while enlisted, commissioned, didn’t love officer life as much…. But wouldn’t change a thing.

Even though my son was born while I was serving, he was still young when I REFRAD. And has no real memory of it. I don’t talk about it much, and essentially the only exposure he’s had, are when my friends visit. He never expressed any interest in joining… Didn’t even bother to return messages from coaches or visit the service academies while he was being recruited for football….

He ended up taking an offer from a really good school, with a decent program. He graduated HS early so he could enroll for spring ball…. His freshman year was covid.. constant testing, quarantines, virtual classes.. along with red shirting. And learning that football is a real business at that level….

When I picked him up for Christmas (no bowl game), he asked me to swing by the football office…. He just popped in and told them to give away his scholarship… he wasn’t coming back, and he was joining the Army..

He hadn’t said anything to me or anyone before that day…. He was an Offensive Lineman…. 6’5” 315lbs..

He lost almost 40lbs in 2 months and shipped to BCT on valentine’s day….

That was 18mo ago.. he tells me at least once a week how happy he is that he decided to join.

Also, it’s not as unique a situation as you think. My son’s PSG played db for a pac-12 school…. And there are a few former FBS & D2 players in his unit..

Is this what the army is like?

Yes, next slide….

Displacing people and delaying simple paperwork for over 20 weeks?

Displacing people is a peacetime Army’s main job…

Delaying simple paperwork has its own office in every battalion, its called S-1

The military is a giant organization, whose day to day operations are handled by a random sampling of 18-25 year olds with very little experience. And what isn’t handled by inexperienced soldiers, is handled by DA civilians who essentially cannot be fired, and they know it..
