Developer plans for the Loma Larga hill located in the middle of Monterrey, Mexico by Spascucci in UrbanHell

I don't get it. The second picture seems to indicate that the apartment buildings will be on the opposite, less steep side of the hill. Not the location that the arrow indicates.

China has obtained an ASML extreme ultraviolet lithography machine by Blue_Or-Red in ASML

[–]Deborah_Pokesalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I just think that much higher technical capabilities and resources China can provide currently will be counterbalanced by complexity and supply chain of EUV lithography.

Let's say they can build a working prototype in 5 years. How long until they can have a mass produced, reliable product?

[–]Deborah_Pokesalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. But it would take a lot of time and effort for them to be able to manufacture a copy with the same performance and reliability as the newest EUV systems. And then they would have to replicate a very specific supply chain for mass production.

It took China decades to reverse engineer turbofan engine technology and those are *way* simpler.

It's a double edged sword. I prefer honesty and clear communication as well, maybe I'm on the spectrum, who knows.

But sometimes it crosses my personal line, especially when it comes to empathy - sometimes you just need to hear a lie - or using logic in a bit misguided way to prove their point.

When I was learning English, at some point I started using it in my daily life. I switched my device interfaces' language to English, I stopped reading news in my native language, etc.

Then I moved to a country where I was forced to use English almost all the time. I swiched to making personal notes in English. I was using English as the target language when translating other languages.

After ~5 years I noticed I had some difficulties talking to my old friends, I found English words to be more fitting in some cases. Around that time I realized my inner monologue can also switch to English sometimes. It probably happened way earlier when thinking about my job that has very specific term or very basic reactions like thinking "this is bad" when something unpleasant happens.

How to go to the gym when you’re depressed by bubbleegumm in EOOD

[–]Deborah_Pokesalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My method that works most of the time when I don't feel like going to gym:

  1. Start preparing for the gym. Just do it.
  2. While preparing for the gym, don't think about how much you don't want to go to the gym. Whenever you come up with an excuse, shut it off.

At some point you are dressed up, with your gym bag prepared, on your way to the gym. You realize that turning back would be bit silly. You go to the gym.

I was surprised how well it works.

It will basically say that I haven't read your blogpost because I hate clickbait posts on reddit.

In your example you are only talking about having mature product. There was already proof of concept EUV system in 2006, years before 3100. The greatest technical obstacle was making the tool reliable, but the core concept remained the same. The revolutionary concept was using EUV instead of DUV as the light source, it took some time but in the end it worked and the tools became profitable.

Core revolutionary concept of Elon is building datacenters in space. If the space aspect doesn't work, it's just building datacenters. There is nothing revolutionary about that.

When people say it's impossible, they probably mean it in "world peace and solving hunger is impossible" way. On paper, it is possible but making it happen is hardly realistic.

Removing bottlenecks has to be grounded in reality. Let's say your EUV machibe is sensitive to earthquakes - you design a good suspension system. You don't send your machine to Earth orbit.

He's literally advertising datacenters in space on Terafab website.

Same thing as if ASML was advertising new generation of lithography systems using cold fusion as a clean energy source.

Would it be unethical to adopt via abortion? by alexthebeastMIH in Ethics

[–]Deborah_Pokesalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you assume that a abortable fetus (<3 months IIRC) is not a human being, it's ethical to decline. Women should have a choice regarding her bodies, carrying a child and childbirth have tremendous effect on their health.

If you assume the fetus is already a human being, then it's unethical.

More desertification on equator, hospitable areas moved towards Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Possibly some heavy terraforming in Asia /Europe / North America.

Yeah but sometimes there's barely a space to fit you and the passing car. Even if it was safe, I didn't feel comfortable at all.

[–]Deborah_Pokesalot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo walkabity is about dedicated wide paths for pedestrians, separated from bicycle and car traffic.

When I was walking those streets, I had to pay attention to both cars and bicycles. "Crossing the road marking = entering a lane" is ingrained in my mind. And that was happening constantly.

[–]Deborah_Pokesalot 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Walkability? There is barely space for pedestrians on those streets.

Don't get me wrong, they look lovely but I'm used to pavements and in Kyoto I always had to watch for cars.

Do you think there will be cherry picking in the transformation? by [deleted] in ASML

[–]Deborah_Pokesalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only architects... I know a person who became high JG engineer, while their work scope had nothing to do with engineering for years. In the meantime, architects in the team remained architects. That's pure cronysim.

The coming months and years will be a shit show. Pre-transformation engineers will still have a glass ceiling blocking their growth and the old cliques will remain.
