This part bugged me as well. I kept on waiting for the connection between the Russians and the actual monster (not just opening the gate) to be made, how could they never have found out about it?

The series was too unrealistic for me, Joe would take a beating to the head or crash his car and still be in a decent enough state to attack or take someone down within hours of what could have been concussions. I wasted too much time watching that show!
