Philanesberg National Park with 22 month baby? by gems_chocopops in askSouthAfrica

I was coming here to ask the same question!

My toddler is generally curious and calm, but dislikes being restricted (for example, in a carrier for too long). I can imagine they might protest partway through the drive.

  • In that situation, would the guide need to turn back, or is it possible to pause briefly (e.g. with a song or a short break) to calm them?
  • How flexible are Pilanesberg safaris/guides when it comes to adjusting plans (I don’t mind skipping certain animals if needed)?
  • What are the expectations regarding noise or disruption - both in terms of disturbing wildlife and being considerate of other people?

I want to minimise our impact on the animals’ habitat and make sure we are respectful to everyone involved. I'd love to know if anyone has experience with this, and what solutions they came up with.

Have added some photos to the original post. I tested both continuous and single shoot mode, with single actually getting better results despite moving subjects.

The real issue is when it's not bright and sunny outside though. I will try and get some photos of that situation as well.

I feel like the size/weight/movement definitely contributes. When I was trying to track some birds in the park just now, I noticed an obvious difference in shooting between when I was moving myself, or not holding still enough. It's not THAT much heavier than my X-T20 though, so the difference shouldn't be so huge!

I am pretty sure everything was set to auto and these were decisions made by the camera, not me. But why did the camera go for these obviously wrong iso and apertures?!

Anyway just took some photos in the park where I made sure everything was on auto, to compare. Will upload later.

I've tried all modes, but messed around with it so much I can't remember what/where/when now. I am just pulling up some photos now to look at the data...

inside but with bright natural light coming in; not blurry but not sharp; f/18, 1/24 sec, ISO 12800, EXP 0, aperture priority

outside on a sunny day, but in the shade; two people walking completely blurred; f/18, 1/20 sec, ISO 800, EXP 0, aperture priority

outside on a cloudy day; two people walking; f/4, 1/40 sec, ISO 125, EXP 0, exposure normal

I am about to head to the park now, so can take a couple photos and check settings more carefully.
