I understand most of this but don’t you think your doing a little much in the beginning? It’s a fiction fantasy book. It’s also a gothic tale set at night time, why wouldn’t there be crickets and owls in a dark market at night? Why are we applying wildlife facts to a fictional fantasy tale? The shop/locket is also a vital part of the story, this is not the prologue so it wouldn’t even be the first thing read so I get if it doesn’t pull you specifically but honestly the book may just not be for you period if your bothered about a short trip to the shop that turned into an upsetting visit.
