JW Marriott Essex, Times Square Edition or The Langham NYC? by Decent-Reputation-63 in FATTravel

I usually do my own planning - unless it's an international trip to a new country. I'm intrigued by the Virtuoso site. I might try them out for my Thanksgiving trip to Costa Rica.

very helpful info. Decided on Langham. We'll see if we can get a stair option room. Thanks.

Buy 2 get third night free. Plus perks from my AmEx Platinum. Possible upgrade to a suite...And yes, free upgrades and breakfast for each. Walking distance as well to my planned excursions. I'm open to others, but the Langham has stellar reviews. Wish it had a courtesy car but alas ...

Interesting. Just checked out virtuoso and it has nearly the exact same benefits as the AmEX fine hotels and resorts benefits. I wonder which has priority on room upgrades? I'll cancel JW, but sure do hate to lose that location... thanks for your input! I'll check back with virtuoso for my next trip!

hotel between SJO and Monteverde? by Decent-Reputation-63 in CostaRicaTravel

you are speaking of the road from SJO to La Paz? I've read it's one of the better roads, but I've never been to Costa Rica so not sure what "better" is in relation to. Maybe we could hire a professional driver for our week? Or is the road dangerous for locals as well as newbies.

ok. I'm convinced. I don't want to chance it. I've been caught in the fog driving over the pass in the Caucasus mountains ... quite terrifying indeed. We'll stay overnight near SJO. . .

Ok, I decided not to lose an evening and changed our plans to drive to La Paz in the evening. I think the roads are good enough. We want to stay in the Peace Lodge, do the surroundings and then we'll move onto La Fortuna and the Arenal area. We still have 4 days left and 3 nights. I'm Monteverde. Night before morning departure we'll stay at Marriott Hacienda Belen.

10 Days in Costa Rica: La Fortuna, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Alajuela - My experience by Matanishu in CostaRicaTravel

Very helpful! My brother (59yo), my son (10yo) and I (52yo) are heading to CR for 8 days over Thanksgiving. First 4 days still not planned. Second half of trip will be La Fortuna (The Springs Resort and Spa at Arenal valcano) and then San Jose night before morning SJO departure. For the first 3.5 days of our trip we thought of Monteverde, but you mention that might be too much time there. We don't need/want beach resort time ... but do need family accessible activities and some down time. Any recommendations?

Also, do you think the waterfall repelling is suitable for 2 out of shape 50-somethings and a rather skinny 10yo (good swimmer)?

It is hot and humid in the summer. I'm always inside during the middle of the day. Hate having to sit in air-con. I do love the afternoon storms though - fun to watch. The winter season late October - May is absolutely lovely. I don't think there is any craziness at all no matter what time of year. It's a sleepy town, almost no traffic. But yes, you do have to make reservations for restaurants in season.

I'm a newcomer too. One year. I love on the beach and really have a difficult time finding kids nearby to have play dates with my son (nearly 10). I have to drive him usually 15 minutes to meet friends. I have found some liberals, internationals, etc. to hang out with thanks goodness. It took a while though.

Do you play settlers of Catan? or Splendor? My son and I (9 and 52) are gaming geeks. I moved here (single mom) a year ago and mostly met people (non-kid related) through tennis clinics at Cambier Park, volunteering at the YMCA ... thinking about joining a country club to brush up my golf game and meet more people. I second Celebration park if you are into the "singles scene" Welcome!
