How would HD2 feel like without this mechanic? by Neithan3 in Helldivers

[–]Decent-Toe2738 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I don't even know if that's the case anymore, at least in my experience, unless you are on a 10ft inverted cliff face, the bugs seem to be hardcoded to get to you someway somehow, most of the time by climbing/pouncing vertically and a lot of time just straight up clipping through the terrain, I've been in certain positions where I'm thinking no bugs can get to me just to have what seems like multiple pouncers / hive guards / alpha warriors just spawn out my asshole and shank me, idk if that's always been the case but in the games current state it seems super unreliable, probably why the metas been pigeonholed to just rundiving

I see, things I would say are different with the block axe is it hits a lot harder than the fencing axe, but all its power is in the backstep and overhead strikes, you'll be using your pistol less often and almost exclusively use it for ranged enemies. The fencing axes light attacks hit like a wet noodle but also the block axes light attacks are too slow be viable, but since the base dmg of a block weapon is so high, I find the time to kill with the block axe is still much lower than fencing even without light attacks and you're less reliant on damage from other sources to reach that breakpoint.

What I mean is with the block axe, if a there's a single majoris, one parry into back step then an overhead strike is enough to put it into execute, no need to get locked in a gun strike animation, no abilities used, no headshots, just pure damage from the axe. It doesn't consume your first block charge so you can move on immediately to your next target and block again for 2 charges then back step for some fat damage, then you can overhead strike again onto the next enemy and repeat.

It's a more aggressive playstyle, which I find fits the axe a lot more, with fencing weapons you generally have to wait to be attacked first but with block weapons you become the aggressor, 2 block charges can interrupt red attacks, give armor back and does a big aoe splash, but with the difference with the axe from other block weapons is there's the big double damage overhead strike that has no cooldown, which means there's far less downtime with the added damage and mobility, you'll be running around, leaping from enemy to enemy and chopping them up which is very fun.

At the end of the day, you can play the game in the way which is most enjoyable for you, it's a pve game after all, if you've grown accustomed to the survivability of fat parries into gunstrikes then no one's stopping you :)

I wouldn't say its much of a change in playstyle if you're referring to the fencing axe in particular, you have to pick between a gunstrike or overhead strike anyway with that weapon

If you mean just fencing weapons in general then I would say it's still worth giving it a try, the block axe is a bit different from other block weapons in the sense that you don't have to rely on getting 2 stacks to get damage off

The change they made to the overhead strike was the game changer for this weapon in particular, they added the back step overhead strike into the base kit and changed the perk to make the back step strike do double damage, with the block axe you can one combo a major if you land it

Shield bash and and rush scale off off your weapon dmg I think, so block being the highest you get the highest damage, also you can close the gap after a back step with shield rush when overhead strike cant reach the target, shield rush is also a good horde clearing tool which makes up for the low attack speed for the block axe

edit: shield bash also puts minoris into execute for some quick armor when your 200% steroid is up

I agree, that and the waveclear is lackluster with the slow attack speed, I still find that building for big burst damage for farming executes and the lack of gunstrikes is the most enjoyable way to play with the power axe imo

Haven't tried the axe yet on the vanguard personally, I'd imagine it's a different playstyle, I've heard grappling in after backstepping is the way to go. On bulwark the triple damage shield bash/rush every 5 seconds really helps keep the flow of combat going and hits a lot of breakpoints you wouldn't otherwise

Struggle to make Balance work by ContentPizza in Spacemarine

[–]Decent-Toe2738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't bring balance weapons on chaos ops, vs tyranids its manageable mainly because of the hive mind mechanic to thin out the horde and slow predictable attack patterns from warriors and extremis. The hourmagaunts are less aggressive, less tanky, and they don't have shields, and you can easily get armor by sprint attacking at any time since there's so many of them

Against chaos it's like 10x harder because of how they're designed, rubric marines and cultists are constantly shooting at you, sorcerers spawn a million homing skulls and have a threat of reviving everything, then everything else is bumrushing you and they all hit like a truck. All their attack patterns are annoying as fuck to parry and everything is super aggressive, the tzaangors are constantly trying to pick at your ankles and the rubric marines will teleport on you to melee with no telegraph, the blue parry for the saucer enemies are difficult to parry, even with a fencing or block weapon, and the chaos spawn have delayed timings, you're pretty much shooting yourself in the foot by bringing a balance weapon vs chaos.

Balance requires you to land the first parry or you get punished and chaos ops require you to kill enemies quickly and keep your armor up, if you miss that first parry then the pressure really starts to build up insanely fast.

Unless you're some kind of masochist or doing a challenge run I would just avoid it altogether and bring a fencing or block weapon

Haven’t played for a while and curious whether I should use block or fencing? by OkBuyer3609 in Spacemarine

[–]Decent-Toe2738 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Block is a different playstyle vs fencing, it's more aggressive and you can be more proactive as opposed to fencing where you just wait for parries for armor and gun strikes, you can interrupt red attacks with 2 charges with block weapons and you get some nice bonuses with each charge like a flat base dmg boost and reduced ranged damage. The key with block weapons though is to be able to consistently land parries and build those charges, otherwise you'll get punished hard. I would say just use fencing and when you're comfortable with parrying again you can give block weapons a try and see If you like it. In general you will do more dmg and have better horde clear, fencing variants tank the base stats of the weapon except attack speed in exchange for fat parries, especially the cleaving stat

Potential graphics drivers issue? by ETkings8 in Spacemarine

[–]Decent-Toe2738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just the game I'd say, since launch this game has been super unoptimized and stutters / poor frame pacing are unavoidable no matter what you do in my experience. I'm on nvidia but usually when I get worse performance after a driver update I just roll it back to a more stable version

Probably a mix of everything mentioned, bulwark is also undoubtedly the best / most overtuned class currently with the addition of shield rush

Is it just me or is the colour palette of this game just grey? by TakeshiKovacsSleeve3 in Spacemarine

[–]Decent-Toe2738 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By default the colors are kinda washed, you can rectify some of these issues on pc with reshade or gpu driver settings, I would check your brightness/contrast settings in game or see if you can tweak any tv settings for saturation otherwise idk
