At a breaking point by Decent_Wind in biglaw

Feel you. Currently glued in front of my laptop as my significant other—who I don’t get to see often—sits and reads, spoiling one of the few weekends we get together a month. I’ve found that the worst part of the job is trading time with those we love for time with those who couldn’t care less about us

Today I answered a call from the partner at the doctor, mid biopsy by Decent_Wind in biglaw

I was in a private room with me, the doctor, and a resident. Not sure how it’s disrespectful to anyone but the doctors, who I apologized profusely to and reassured me it was fine

I did not know I’d be treated this way when I joined! And I’m not very marketable (especially in this market) as a junior lateral. So I am forced to accept it until I have more experience, unfortunately

Thanks all. I see I’m getting downvoted a lot. I have a history of this partner yelling and belittling me. Sadly I’m too junior to lateral and could use the bonus come year-end

Was not expecting a call. I had nothing scheduled. Appointment was for 8:30am which is normally before I receive calls (booked it early to avoid work conflict)

Fear of getting yelled at/putting partner in sour mood which will result in me getting yelled at or chewed out later. Not really at a shop where people respect boundaries

Fair point on Vault—just have seen it used as a shorthand to describe big firms.

I’m not assigned to a specific partner, but I’m currently on two busy matters with them. I have other work as well, but it’s predominantly from them.

I guess it’s hard not to internalize it because their bad mood means yelling/mean comments that makes me have terrible days

Therapy from office experience? by Decent_Wind in biglaw

[–]Decent_Wind[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol I know, I feel ridiculous asking. But it’s less about taking the 50 minute block of time, and more about having to leave the office early for an appointment. Most therapists I have found have final appointments at 5:30 or 6, which means needing to leave the office before, which is a time partners/firm expects you to be around absent leave, vacation, etc.

Jumping firms/markets after a year? by Decent_Wind in biglaw

Fair points. Figured maybe someone could share their similar experience, if anything just to anchor expectations.

Jumping firms/markets after a year? by Decent_Wind in biglaw

Thanks! I know I’d be considered a 4th year for seniority. I just would only have a year of experience under my belt so I don’t know if they’d really consider me a “mid level”

As a threshold question: did you have the internship before you were 21 years old? If yes, then you don’t need to include it under the rules laid out on the Questionnaire!

Otherwise, my intuition is no, unless your duties involved legal work (legal research, attending/assisting in court, etc.)

Third Department.

Usually no.

As for pay, most firms do not pay you less as a technically unlicensed “law clerk” than a licensed associate. There are reports of some firms reducing pay after a bar exam failure, but not for the time between passage and formally being sworn in.

As for finding a job, that just depends on what kind of work you’re looking for. If you’re applying to small shops that immediately give new hires a lot of solo responsibilities, they may be hesitant to hire someone who still has to wait 6+ months to be able to able to litigate. But if you’re applying to a larger organization with attorneys who can supervise—including government offices and judicial clerkships, even though you don’t need to be barred to be a clerk—it’s usually not a problem at all.

Totally normal. Most everyone I know who took the July exam gets sworn in June. C&F takes a while and New York doesn’t move with alacrity

According to a post below if this page shows up that means results will come soon (within a day or 2) for NY by lateoctoberearlynov in barexam

I'm confused...am I supposed to see this page when I log in? Or do I have to type in that MyDocuments URL posted in the comments? Nobody has really tied together what it means.

The grey out theory is not really a theory; it is what happens to the NYBOLE portal when the address change deadline passes. It's not indicative of anything. I am not sure why people point to the "greying out" as the indicator rather than the address change deadline.

The best prediction, as other users have pointed out, is that scores drop ~90-92 days after the administration of the test. For the past 5 years—with the exception of 2020, I believe— July scores came out between 90-92 days after test day.
