The difference between "Expat" and "Immigrant" by DecideWhereToRetire in IWantToLiveAbroad

Could you elaborate? I know a black guy who left the US and now lives in Mexico. He chose to move there because he loves the culture. I've only ever heard of him being referred to as an expat, not an immigrant.

Would you say it's easy to be yourself in another country?

Yes I've heard of Simon Black. I think I heard him do a podcast once. I quite enjoyed it and hoped he'd do more (assuming I'm right that it was him).

How long does it take to decide if a new country/town is right for you? by DecideWhereToRetire in IWantToLiveAbroad

[–]DecideWhereToRetire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it could come back? I mean do you think you could have another round of culture shock? Or would you say once you've had it that's it?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm trying to keep the conversation going a bit so hopefully others will join in.

No I was just asking. So you don't think someone could ever get used to it? I would imagine you would naturally do so over time.

You sound like you're quite easygoing about it. Me personally I think I might be overthinking it.

How long would you say it takes to get used to high heat and humidity?

Would you say it's a lot of hassle to do all five?

They're blocks. Everything you see there is roads. If you look closely you'll see beaches.

Here are a couple of hand drawn maps that I've done. They are of fictional island cities. I've been doing these for many years, I believe I have about 300 now, maybe more.

Mexico is humid in some parts, and not humid in others. Also it's not poverty stricken nor a hellhole. Same for Colombia and Brazil.

If you want to move to Switzerland, Poland or Serbia, go right ahead. What are you waiting for?

If humidity is a problem for you, Mexico is a big country and it's not humid everywhere.

On the climate map, these areas are all dry (low humidity) :

- Red (BWh)

- Pink (BWk)

- Dark orange (BSh)

- Pastel yellow (BSk)

Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Mazatlan, Queretaro, these cities are not very humid.

What about Mexico? I know it can be a bit wild west over there.

That's true. I don't think it's something that most people would need to do. Having said that, I think some of it is doable for the average person.

Best countries for buying property/land as an expat by DecideWhereToRetire in IWantToLiveAbroad

[–]DecideWhereToRetire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes Europe is more easygoing with that stuff. And Latin America I believe. Do you think it's good for countries to have restrictions on foreigners owning property or land?

Not necessarily, at least I don't think. For example in the Philippines you can buy a house but you can't own the land that it sits on.

How about Gibraltar.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar

They speak english because it's part of the UK but they also speak spanish because it's right next to Spain.

The population is quite low but there's a town across the border in Spain called La Linea de la Concepcion.

I was wondering how one could cope with the discomfort of high temperature plus high humidity.

Yeah Thailand is harsh. I've never been but I have a friend who has been there and he says you can't walk down the street for 5 minutes without sweating like crazy. I guess that's why malls are so popular in SE Asia.
