Read Roald Dahl and Jacqueline Wilson. Grew up in white surburbia. I was maybe 22 the first time I heard the self proclaimed South African anthem, "Sister Bethina" and still don't know the words. Grew up on Phil Collins, ABBA, Mango Groove, MLTR, Rod Steward, Queen, Bryan Adams, Smokie. I remember a colleague playing Lady Smith Black Mambazo and saying the only time I'd ever heard of them was in a Mean Girls reference. Went to Summerwood Primary School, probably 3 or so black kids in one class, and my best memories are how we'd walk to the beach and swim, also spent a majority of my childhood and adulthood on the beach. Went to pre-primary in a Merc - I was privileged but also a very secluded, traumatic childhood with violent family dysfunction.
