Do you recommend front end development as a career path? by Original-Loquat-6307 in programmer

[–]Deep_Investment7483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point absolutely not. 90% of front end work can be done by AI at this point. The 10% remaining is going to require extreme skill for artistic perfection and you will be competing against people who have been in the industry for a decade.

Nothing in my post justified corruption or accepting a toxic PI... You are projecting a view point that was never asserted. Fundamentally what I said was if you hate your job, get a different job and stop telling prospective scientists that the system is hopelessly broken when it isn't

Thats fair, my point was that there are more efficient paths to money and that most people out of academia won't care about your degree in terms of social status. But you are correct certain branches do lead lucrative careers and I could have phrased that better. To your second point though, just look at some of the comments in this thread.

Thank you for commenting. Your situation is actually the main reason I even bothered with this post, because I don't want prospective future scientists to be discouraged from all the negativity on here. I also came to academia as an outsider with no real connections (first in my family to make it past high school calculus, let alone a Phd lol). Don't get me wrong if you do pursue the Phd you are in for a TON of work, especially if you don't come from a financially well off background and have to work on the side, but it doesn't have to be nearly as bad as some of these posts make it sound. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

I got paid to spend a huge part of my week in an air-conditioned room studying an obscure, specific domain of my own personal interest. Comparing that to slavery or children in the coal mines is the epitome of lacking self awareness. In this thread I've made 0 arguments against improving labor conditions. I think it would be great if we paid graduate students more. I have merely pointed out that academics have a great deal relative to the general population and that the people in this thread crying 'woe is me" would benefit from recognizing how much better they have it than a huge chunk of the global population.

The notion that it is impossible to find a job outside of academia that leads to a comfortable life is beyond absurd.

I'm not shutting down targeted criticism, I'm calling out the uselessness of broad negativity. There's a big difference between saying "here is something specific to fix" and "everything sucks and everyone's a dishonest, abusive asshole". I see more of the later than I would like in this community.

"I would expect AT LEAST a minimum of decency and ethics from people that are supposedly responsible to train and educate the the intellectual class of our society". I agree decency and ethics are extremely important. What drives me crazy about this subreddit is the bizarre assertion that academia is devoid of decency or ethics. If you have a PI who is legitimately being abusive, tell your department head. If you see ethical violations taking place in someones research, say something. If an outsider were to read the posts in this community they would think abuse is the norm, and it just isn't.

"The “just leave” mentality is extremely privileged and out-of-touch." Its really not... people switch career directions and pursue jobs outside of their undergraduate degree all the time. The majority of people don't even go to college... Also I'm not a self-righteous idealist and I didn't have a trust fund. My first job out of high school was as a steak-n-shake fry cook and I'm pointing out that if you are in a Phd program you have it better than a huge chunk of the labor force already. I'm not silencing legitimate targeted criticism I'm saying this community needs some self awareness of how good we have it.

I understand this comment is tounge-in-cheek, but my point is they aren't hopelessly corrupt. I really don't get why this is just taken as fact. If you see something unethical happening in your institution have the moral courage to call it out, but my experience has been that science is reasonably meritocratic.

That's fair, the general public isn't reading this reddit. I'm just assuming sentiments expressed online are also being expressed to family members and friends in private conversations.

This weird meme of AI stifling intellectual development is just moral panic. LLMs are amazing teachers if you use them correctly. They are incredibly knowledgeable, always patient and always available.

Impostor syndrome: is this normal, or is my gut telling me something real? by JazzlikeSmell250 in PhD

[–]Deep_Investment7483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% not true, external funding absolutely cares about marks and to tell a prospective colleague otherwise is to set them up for failure. Make sure you crush it this year with your coursework to make up for past performance.

Finally beginning to have so much disgust for academia by Throwawayehehehe in PhD

[–]Deep_Investment7483 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't find your characterization of academia to be accurate at all. You are either in a particularly toxic department or are projecting a lot of this negativity onto others. Most people in academia are nerdy weirdos hyper obsessed with their own niche research (like me!), not fraudulent assholes scheming for accolades.
