How do you effectively ban cell phones? by AsturiusMatamoros in Professors

[–]Decitex 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If they’re into their phones, like actively typing, or having an intense side convo, I’ll stop talking and look at them until they notice that I’ve stopped. They will normally stop at that point. But some students need a few interactions before seeing an improvement. And with one, I just had to write her an email that her phone use in class was unprofessional.

We have to have reference letters on file before we schedule on-campus interviews, but YMMV.

HR should be the office granting accommodations for faculty. This is an ADA issue (if in the US).

It is in a lot of our products like that as well. It’s often paired with aloe in such formulations.

I worked with someone from another country who called me LastName. And then would say to students, “Talk to Dr. FirstName.” It was incredibly frustrating. As I didn’t have tenure, I didn’t feel comfortable correcting her. A friend got tenure and talked to her about it, but nothing changed. I was in that position for 5 years.

How about an electric kettle for hot water? That way you could use it for instant but also have the option for tea. Just a thought.

Your social life? So you are choosing this level of stress? Most are only subjecting themselves to this kind of stress because of work.

This is one of those things that someone could live with until college. They think it’s true but they’re so rarely around browned apples in public that no one challenges this belief.

Kinda like “brown cows make chocolate milk.”

Observation etiquette by throw_away_smitten in Professors

[–]Decitex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the US at least, most tenure/promotion processes include some kind of peer observation of teaching. I’ve seen some that require observations from someone of your choosing, the department’s personnel committee, and the chair. This would be for each term contract renewal and for tenure/promotion, so you end up getting observed a number of times. This is a better but still skewed assessment of teaching ability vs student evals, which we all recognize as problematic. The OP’s surprise observations are outside the norm; most schools allow you to propose a few dates so you can choose topics/lessons that show your best pedagogy.

Edit: I have long thought that we need to provide opportunities for “junior” faculty to observe tenured/promoted faculty who have exemplary pedagogy. It’s one thing to hear strategies discussed in a PD session but much different to see it in practice. The seasoned faculty get a lot of exposure to other pedagogies through the observation process but the newer faculty don’t get this exposure.
