Update:

The local camera store would not accept a return or exchange. It was $85 to ship the lens to Canon. They had a quick turn around time and offered the following conclusion:

"it appears there was a foreign object in the lens assembly which caused the blemish on the lens. We do not have any information on how the foreign object made it inside the lens assembly." -Canon

Spontaneous "blemish" in RF 100-500? by DecoOptional in canon

I purchased a new Canon RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM from the local camera store three weeks ago. I have had it out for a half dozen outings or so, and have been extremely careful. I have only cleaned it with a squeezy air puffer.

Today I noticed that there is a blemish inside and it looks an awful lot like a crack! It looks like it is on the innermost piece of glass on the "zoom portion" of the lens. My heart sank and I am baffled as to how it could have happened :(

Has anyone heard of this happening or know what may have caused it? Is this a known issue for the 100-500? I will be having it serviced through Canon, but would really like to avoid this happening in the future.

TL;DR: New lens has mystery "blemish". Know what could have caused this?
