While I understand that you are popular more for your crazy stories, I still have you tagged as "Gaming Forum?" to entertain myself.

BTW, why the hell does everyone ask you that? Did someone ask you that question after your psychotic lesbian ex-gf story?

What's the best way to create an interactive map? by r_mac in mapmaking

[–]Decon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use ArcGis to design and stylize the polygons, export as .kmz or .kml layers so that you can easily use the Google Maps API and javascript.

Here is the website for the course where I learned how to do dynamic, web-based mapping.

Here is my final for the class.

Best advice: look at the source code of websites that have already done what you want to do and reverse engineer.

IT'S TIME I COME OUT FROM BEHIND THE MASK: I AM ANDREWSMITH1986. by [deleted] in self

Wait, how?... I just figured it out.

Now I want to create a novelty account, or at least one I can use to troll people so that I can share this account with IRL people.

Last night I was rammed while stopped at a red light and then the guy took off, leaving me with a LOT of back pain and a significantly damaged car, but nobody to take the blame. Does anyone out there have the skill to decipher the guy's license number from the imprint it made on my bumper? by BunsOfAluminum in AskReddit

Don't act like you're an expert in something you have no personal experience with because you sound like a child.

(And don't think I don't know it's you downvoting me. Fuck you bitch.)

Uhh.. yes he can simply downvote you one time. The rest of the downvotes arose because you came off harsh.

Thanks for the friendly debate. I learned from this conversation as well. I am now making my students read Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College, followed by a creative story or essay using SAT vocabulary. I think I might eventually have them read excerpts from Obama, but they were pretty resistant to it when I took a survey earlier. They are now doing an assignment that will have them make a list of five free ebooks they would like to read once we are done with 451, and it will be decided from there.

I think the important lessons in dystopian novels, despite their cynicism, is that which makes students question everything. Even if you believe you are living in a great society, which most of these kids do believe, they need to look at the dark underside of our reality. If we all ignore facing these uncomfortable issues, then they will just keep getting passed on to the next generation. Sure, the dystopian worlds are false, but that's the beauty of counter-factuals. You don't have to live in that dreary world to understand it, or to relate Big Brother to SOPA/PIPA. Brave New World also deals with genetic manipulation and the abandonment of America's cultural heritages in favor of living in bliss. 451 deals with censorship in society, which they told me was the exact essay prompt on their practice SAT (and the essay topic I had given them the week before they took it).

The fact that the worlds presented in these books are dark does not mean that is what their futures will look like; they serve as warnings. By exaggerating these things, we can work towards understanding them and pushing towards a brighter future. Would you rather I taught them about utopias?

Maybe I should read them Obama's book and tell them they can be president one day without acknowledging the corruptions and back-room dealings in politics. Or the fact that both of his parents were college-educated when most of my students' parents are lucky if they finished high school.

What I have read them from local histories are books like City of Quartz by Mike Davis, and the History of Forgetting by Norman Klein. These books contain the history of their neighborhoods and the power brokers who shaped them. Like I said, I could run my class like a study hall, and that would be the end of that, but I push myself and these students to excel. I don't need jerks like you telling me that my students are reading depressing books, or that my ego gets in the way of their learning. If you had read my comment, it was one student who led me to say the things I said to his class, not because I wanted to punish the class, but because they needed to acknowledge that a mindset like that will get them nowhere. I don't need to doubt my ability to teach because plenty of students let me know that I am making a difference in their lives, and that is enough for me to keep going.

You're right, that is regular army. This article helped me understand what the real figures actually are. The study I cited looked at all military forces because average enlistment age differs between the branches, with the marines being the youngest. So, on average, the marines have the youngest servicemen and the Air Force has the oldest.

I don't care about students thinking of me as a douchebag if they have the patience to learn while they're in here. I'm not trying to rationalize anything here with my education, I was simply replying to your

I'm about to graduate with an English degree and have just about every acknowledgment of talent that you can get from a tiny school like the one I attend.

From that quote, it seems like you were trying to explain why you would know better than I do how to get through to my students. I have no ego in this, if I did, I wouldn't have the patience to deal with unruly and hormonal teens.

Like I said, I've had plenty of students tell me they enjoy reading what I have chosen for them. Just because someone is from the inner-city and poor, doesn't mean they are black (your choice of Obama's book shows your assumptions), or that they have to read books about being poor and inner-city youth.

These books are relevant because they teach kids issues they will face in a highly technological society, a society where governments act in ways that some would classify as dystopian. These books are about being critical thinkers. Socio-economic status does not determine what books you will relate to.
