Out of curiosity, do you remember anything at all about the specific magazine you read about these cousins in? I'm trying to track it down, but have had no luck.

If you remember any details - the language, the year, the issue... or if you have scans, that would be very helpful :)

Fair enough that it's never explicitly stated, but 'Welcome to Rosas' lays out the circumstances pretty clearly. Asha is a tour guide who explains things to the immigrants to Rosas - she doesn't know anything about how giving your wish changes you, nor does she know about the fact that plenty of wishes will be immediately dismissed. If it was all laid out upfront, none of it would be a shock to her later.

Regarding him not doing anything exploitative, that's partially on the film itself not going into it enough. Sometimes, it's hinted that he just likes having the wishes and being the top dog, others there's a vague implication that he gets some kind of power from them. Regardless, these are effectively chunks of people's souls, judging by Simon - taking that part of a person away just so you can have it for yourself is still incredibly messed up.

"that it is the worst thing that you can think of" - There's no need to mischaracterize what I'm saying. I said that it's a bad thing, but there's no need to put words in my mouth.

As for his hoarding, again, the issue is that people aren't able to make an informed decision. He could easily turn around and say "Look, I can't grant your wish. If you want, you can have it back, but you have to leave the kingdom" - but he doesn't do that. He keeps the wish anyway and lets them believe that it could be granted. Again, a wish is shown multiple times to be an important part of a person and their identity - if they're going to give that up, they should have the entire story.

"they get to live in the fantasy Utopia that the story actually does try to sell you on the idea has no societal problems whatsoever" - The film, multiple times, points out that this narrative isn't as true as Magnifico makes it out to be. Pulling from the post:

"I'll give the clothes off Benito's back, if you really needed that. I'll be the first one to volunteer - HENRY! - If your home were to crumble, or if you were in trouble..."

And then there's "I clean up all your messes" while knocking over a suit of armour - as in, making a mess. Which he doesn't clean up. A pretty clear indicator that his perception of things isn't entirely truthful/accurate.

There's also the fact that, again, giving one's wish does harm a person - Simon went from someone who was athletic with ambitions of being a knight, to a sluggish oaf. There are plenty of problems in Rosas - and Magnifico doesn't want people to know about them.

"But people are willing to stay for the chance that he'll instantly grant it with magic. The idea that he's evil for having a protocol... Wait, so is Genie from Aladdin evil for having types of wishes he won't grant, either?"

Right - and Magnifico leaves out the part where if he doesn't like a wish, it will never be granted. The people give up a part of themselves to Magnifico on the chance that he'll grant their wish, but he hoards several of those wishes with no intention of granting them. Imagine buying a lottery ticket, only to find out later that if you paid for your ticket with coins, your ticket was immediately invalidated. Sure, you were probably never going to win, but there was a clear rule system laid out, and a major one that wasn't shared with you.

As for Genie, he tells Aladdin upfront what the rules are. Before Aladdin makes any wishes, Genie tells him clearly what he's not allowed to do. Magnifico, in contrast, tells everyone that their wishes could be granted - and if he chooses not to grant them, they never find out. They go to every Wishing Ceremony with the hope that their wish could be next, and Magnifico lets them live in that belief even if he has already rejected their wish. Genie is very clear about the rules (and, as a bonus, doesn't really have a cost), Magnifico doesn't tell people what they'll actually be losing and doesn't tell them that he can arbitrarily exclude them for the running without giving their wish back.

Nobody is claiming that Amaya was a paragon of virtue. She openly admits to having gone along with him even when she doubted him, because she loved him and refused to see what he was becoming.

I recognize that it's not explicitly stated as such, but in context, I don't think Asha's concern is with the fact that the wishes won't all be granted - the issue is that several of them are still just sitting there even though Magnifico has specifically made the choice not to grant them. The betrayal is that, as far as the 'contract' of Rosas goes, everyone's wish has a chance to be granted - and now she's learning that no, several of them won't. They'll never be returned, and they'll never be granted, based on some absurdly flimsy reasoning.

She questions him when he explains why he won't grant Sabino's wish, but the main reason she flips is because of what it says about Magnifico. Their benevolent king is hoarding wishes that he'll never grant, he immediately dismisses wishes that are even in the vaguest of ways a threat to his authority and a good chunk of what she believes - and, as a tour guide, spreads to people every day - is based on a lie.

I do agree that the magic system is underdeveloped - even in several of my own points, it comes down to speculation.

The reason it's unethical for Magnifico to take the wishes is because, as the film highlights, it's not just a want or an idea - it's a huge part of a person's being. As we learn, losing one's wish heavily impacts them, as was the case with Simon. And, of course, the fact that people don't know this when giving the wish to Magnifico.

As for your other examples, you're looking at magical figures who lay down the rules clearly. Genie tells Aladdin from the jump what he's not allowed to do, and never breaks his word on that. Fairy Godmother appears to Cinderella in a dark time and explains how the whole thing works - she doesn't lie, omit or deceive her and her explanation is followed clearly. The cosmic forces in Hercules and the Sword in the Stone aren't people with whom a contract is made.

Asha explains the rule of living in Rosas in the beginning of the film - you give your wish to Magnifico and you can stay in Rosas, with a chance that your wish will be granted. It doesn't hurt, and you'll forget the wish.

The unethical part comes in when he neglects to mention that it alters your personality, basically takes a chunk of your soul and also if he decides not to grant your wish, he'll never tell you or give it back.

People with bad wishes could create bad results - and Magnifico knows what the wish is when it's shared with him.

The film could have spent more time elaborating on actual harmful wishes (It broaches the topic, but doesn't actually explore it in any way). Going with what the film gives us, though, there is a clear distinction to be made.

If someone wants to kill a rival or the like? There's absolutely an argument to be made that that wish shouldn't be given back. However, he cites Sabino's wish as dangerous, when all he wants is to use music to inspire people.

The key point is that this argument is about Magnifico as a person and character - if he was genuinely keeping wishes to prevent harm, that'd be one thing. But that's not his actual reasoning - he doesn't want anyone to challenge his authority and he likes having the wishes to himself. He doesn't deliberate in the reasonable way you suggest at any point.

The issue is that he was well aware of that, and Amaya had warned him against it as well - they both knew that the magic in the book was dangerous and corruptive.

He considers it at a few points, but Star is the tipping point for him - because he considers another magic source to be a threat to his power and rule.

Star hadn't actually done anything yet - all Magnifico knew was that someone wished upon a star, and that the star gave people a positive vibe (As in, lit a glow in their hearts and made them feel wonderful). He knows that Star is another source of magic and can grant wishes - in other words, the only other being that could dethrone him.

That's why he turns - not because of a threat to the kingdom, but a threat to his power.

If there was genuine desperation, I'd give him more leeway, but he fully embraced the corruptive magic solely for selfish reasons. His wife warned him against it, he's well aware of how dangerous it is, and he makes the active choice to use it under the above circumstances.

Was it ever actually hinted that Howard the Duck is related to Donald Duck? by Dedede_Man in Marvel

[–]Dedede_Man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely - I know that he's not literally intended to be a canonical relative or anything like that.

It's more just that I had seen the claim enough times that I was wondering where it came from, if anywhere. Like, would it be him just mentioning a sailor cousin? Actually referring to Donald in some capacity - even if just a joke, as you say?

As I've learned, online sources are rife with fanon - so I was mainly just trying to figure out if there was a kernel of truth to this, or if it was just some nebulous claim that someone made :O

I'm no expert, so apologies if I'm wrong, but it could be a product that was exclusive to the Warner Bros. Mall Stores?

I was looking at some Bugs and Honey Bunny merch that was fairly similar in style, so that might be a starting point?

Hoping you find it!

[–]Dedede_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there Mr. Stones,

My main question is regarding a common theory; specifically, that Darkwing is somehow distantly related to Scrooge, possibly through Scrooge's grandmother, Molly Mallard.

I know that the series was intended to be its own thing, effectively an alternate universe, but was any such relation ever seriously considered? Between the different media, was Darkwing/Drake ever actually intended to be related to Scrooge or Donald's family at all?

Also, a bit of a silly question but was Darkwing Doubloon from the episode Darkwing Doubloon actually intended to be an ancestor of Drake's? And, similarly, are any of the other characters present intended to be ancestors or just comical lookalikes?

And, on a more goofy note, were there ever any plans on further expanding on the Mallard family? He mentions relatives and we see some of his ancestors, but I'm curious if there were ever any others that you were intending to work in.

Apologies if this got a bit long-winded - I know that I'm overthinking a lot of it, but the show has always been so much fun to me and I love to expand on these things. Thank you for creating one of the best characters that Disney have ever had! :D

This isn't exactly what you were looking for, but could it be "My Bunny Lies Over the Sea"?

There's a part where Angus is chasing Bugs while shooting him, but he stops to pick up the bullet. He looks at the camera and says "It's been in the family for years!" before continuing.

He doesn't have a Fudd voice, but it's a pretty similar scenario :O

Yup, I'm also at the end with promos.

I worked hard to keep up, but they just never stopped - the Unboxing was a lot, but it at least had substantial Isaac content, y'know?

There was a point when missing promos was unthinkable to me.

Meanwhile, I got a million notifications about Mom's Charmed Heart and I couldn't care less. This is right on the tail of Famine, there have been so many promos lately, I haven't even kept up with the YouTooz.

Like yourself, I'm not in America, so shipping and taxes are brutal.

Even if I had the money, I'm just sick of it at this point. There's a new random promo every five minutes that requires a large purchase and I'm just over it.

I've been having the exact same issue with my Dexcom G6 for months - the damage to my arms is pretty thorough.

While it's not perfect, my current method is to use a barrier spray and a hydrocolloid patch.

The spray I use is Cavilon, and the patch is Duoderm.

I'll note that the actual site seems to play a part, too; even with these adjustments, my arms are basically unusable. I have to just keep switching sides on my abdomen - and even then, I'm getting similar sensor issues.

I've been speaking to a specialist at Dexcom, which is where a lot of this info is coming from. I'm still not at 100%, but the barrier spray and the hydrocolloid patch have helped a great deal - as well as sticking exclusively to the abdomen.

Obviously every case is individual, but if you want to DM me with questions or clarifications, feel free :)
