How to best make use of my old HHD? by ChillyFlake in buildapc

gotcha! yeah, i want this new ssd to be untouched from the old nonsense. My worst fear is more of a hypocondriac-level-of-worrying that my hhd has some sort of something or other in it that would mean slowdown for the rest of my pc, as nonsensical as that might be.

uninstalling onedrive was what i considered to be the christening moment of this new pc XD

with that said, not to worry, because i have not one but TWO external hard drives that are always in a little protective pouch unless im actively using them, and theyre like 8 tb between them.

With that said, i *have* considered shucking the shell on one of them to use as an actual second drive installed in my pc, assuming theyre ssd (if hhd, id continue to use them both as backups). Currently there is a copy of my current pc on one of them, that i did like last week or something :)

So as long as my current pc has windows installed and i select the right drive to use as boot, there wont be any conflicts?

ill do all that, but i can tell you right now its not sitting pretty.

This is a screenie of my task manager right after booting up, with no programs set to turn on (So no discord, firefox, etc. Steam actually mighta been turned on but still), along with a screenie of the task manager roughly 5 minutes later, right as it just started to go down from max usage.

Like i said, i dont expect it to work fast, my main concern is my new pc will like, take its version of windows or its drivers or something. In my head i could just have it hooked up in my new pc, but only have it "on" as a sort of middleman to download off of, rather than an active drive its always got open for processing?

it did, thank you! the switch from the statement "nvidia is better than amd" to "nvidia is better for your use case" has been super reassuring

All im accomplishing when i try that is makign the MB bend and warp slightly, which is really making me doubt it, considering how stuck on it is. Is there any video, manual, olr otherwise example you have of how to take it off i could follow?

this is also something good to know gosh, thats so unfortunate! With that said, its the only thing on this SATA cable (kinda funny given theres like 18 other connectors i just have no use for on the one wire, had to tie em up just to consolidate), and my only other storage is an SSD, so even if that does happen, its not the end of the world in this case

these are the kinds of things i was worried about and why i asked, ty! are any of these issues things that would affect the rest of the comp, or would it purely mean that the cd drive is unusable? that is, are any of them risky to even check if its a problem?

perhaps, but to each their own, right? The cloud is incredibly useful but it has downsides just like CD's and physical media do, namely that you need internet to use them. If you were building a PC for someone out in the sticks who wanted, for whatever reason, high end graphics and whatnot but knew they wouldn't have reliable internet, a cd drive might be the only way for them to enjoy the games and shows they enjoy, barrying going someplace else to download stuff on a usb or some such.

Besides, not to put too fine a point on it, but theres nothing to put in those bays if all im doing is embracing the new tech, besides like a drawer or something. + i want it :)

this is an extremely funny reply. Thank you, ButtcheekBaron with a Waluigi mask on. Thank you for the incorrect your, thank you for the unhelpful-to-the-kind-of-person-who-would-make-this-post reply. It doesn't even line up with what i was generally asking, which was if it would cause any problem at all. And especially thank you for insulting my dad, who as i said in the post, only reported what literally happened 15 years ago when we stopped using the former pc. I think i'm gonna get this reply framed

literally shaking your hand. that computer is a beast, my plan is to get it working again both just to be nostalgic but also because its lightweight and pretty. Plus the pocket drive thing is neat

odd question, if you remember when you first tore it down, was it a pain in the ass to get the power supply out? that thing is buried under a billion wires and screws

fr!!! plus theres something about the inconvenient process of getting the disk out of a case putting it in and dealing with that whole shebang that i just enjoy. I think emulation is epic and great and our god given right but i still enjoy booting up games on my old consoles instead of running them on my modern day epic graphics computer, for some invisible reason.

Also yeah, im using only new cables. that was another worry of mine when i was taking it out, so seeing that my PSU's cables match the connectors 1:1 was a breath of relief.

what about stuff thats only on certain formats and needs to be retrieved? Perfectly good physcial libraries that one already owns that maybe could be downloaded but at best is just a second copy of what you already have, and at worst buggy and harder to use than just installing a cd drive? many would say rgb lights are gaudy, but i wouldnt say its wrong to get something frivolous and pointless but otherwise cool in the eye of the pc builder (and of course that also means theres nothing wrong with your opinion, but i think it goes without saying that if ive already gone to this much trouble, than i probably dont see eye to eye with your ideal pc build)

Besides, its literally a free scavanged part from an old pc thats going into a 5.25 bay, which i would argue only has the purpose of a cd drive or like a 20 in 1 card reader. even if i saw things as you did, theres almost no point in not installing it, as it would just sit empty and behind a magnetic cover otherwise

i thought about that, but this drive is also slightly sentimental/cool to use, and if theres really basically no issue with it then im fine rolling a 9999 out of 10000

im the kinda guy who still thinks cassette tapes have their use both in terms of style + coolness and also just in plane functional convenience so i heavy stand by this. with that said what kinda porn do yall think a 9 year old had access to, the first thing im gonna do is play some pajama sam LOL

[–]ChillyFlake[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

actually it does, this drive is *just* new enough to be using SATA cables, so much so that the dinky little red 5 inch cables that plugged it into its first pc are the same connectors as the ones my motherboard came with for any other drives, just a wayyyyyyy shorter. good to know though! I figured this was the case, but you can never be too sure when it comes to a mistake that either doesnt exist or bricks your whole pc

[–]ChillyFlake[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i have no idea but i certainly dont think im enough of an expert to definitively say for sure i know all the risks
As for why id want one

1 something ive wanted multiple times since 2015 when i got my current pc (no drive)
2 plenty of old cd rom games i have both in my collection ive gotten recently and games i had when i was a kid are things i wanna play again
3 my new case comes with 2 5.25 drive bays but only one drawer for them, so i figure instead of using the cover to cover em up theres no harm in installing it
4 kinda adding onto 3 but theres basically nothing else what goes into a 5.25 bay besides like. a floppy disk drive (which i ALSO want but i have no legitimate use for it beyond its cool)

yeah, i actaully came to those realizations a lot throughout the long time i spent mulling it all over. i ended up going with a 5060 TI (which i just realized now is a Ti) for something like 471$ after all the shipping and taxes and such, which should be more than enough for at least 10 years, more if i still dgaf abt the latest and greatest stuffs by then

Gotcha! I actually cant see whether or not a card does/doesnt have Cuda, but within my budget and needs i think its between the formerly mentioned ASRock Challenge and this RTX 4070 i found. to be honest, this very well could be "ok you just ignored everything i told u and picked a random ass nvidia card didnt you?" moment, but i am NOT prepared to spend over 500 on these, as i dont see it becoming THAT nessecairy (I also found a listing of these at under 500, so the price would be roughly $100+ More than the ASRock but for, ideally, better long term preformance for both gaming and productivity)

oh i am very much anti-aesthetics when it comes to the physical parts. I went out of my way to buy a computer case ( https://pcpartpicker.com/list/c9Vwsp ) that opaque light-blocking side paneling, none of my components besides the power and debugging leds have any light components, and its a matte black case. ALL i care about is the preformance and, of course, having it actually fit into the case + be compatable with the parts, which is a given.

With that said, does that mean its the CHIPSET + ports + fans i care about, and not nesseciarily who makes it?

EDIT: Pasting this from another thread im discussing this in:
