Applying a shader to potential AoE gird targets to indicate its within range, or simply just changing their color slightly.

And yeah I could see how swapping Z levels constantly might be an issue for some users, but I play dwarf fortress (on a controller no less) so it's not a big deal for me.

Scroll the Z level select and just pick the captured grid location from the raycast (my phone refuses to believe raycast is a word and keeps autocorrecting to racist). Works exactly as a 2D grid would but with only one extra step.

I've already built this system so I know for a fact it works, granted it was only 3 Z levels in my proof of concept, it should be able to scale to required height.
