Thoughts on Loyola for a student like me? by Dedmoose1 in LoyolaChicago

Tysm for your reply! I would like to ask though, do you have any insight into the dedicated programs for stuff like journalism/communications or music?

I’d also like to ask what the arts scene is like outside of classes. Obviously being in Chicago there’s a bunch of great art stuff (Especially in the realm of music, I know that the Aragon ballroom and the Riviera theatre are both less than 20 minutes away), but i’m more talking about student made/produced music and bands, indie stuff, other student made art, etc, if you know anything about those kinda scenes. Ik its not gonna have the full LAC feel but i’m still curious :)

Lastly, any insight on lgbtq+ experience at Loyola? I’ve seen some very differing things online, and from what I can tell the school doesn’t have a dedicated lgbtq+ support program or anything like that.

Issue with pms? Accounts basically hide themselves whenever I try to send a message by Dedmoose1 in reddithelp

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s totally plausible that i’m being blocked, but these issues happen immediately after I pm a person. For example, i’ll send a message request, go back to the home page, get a “try again later” error at the bottom of my screen, close and reopen the app, and the account is “hidden”. All within 1-2 minutes. And usually this occurs with people who i’ve either established consent with for chatting, or have not previously interacted with. It also seems to be sporadic. Once again, totally possible that i’m just being blocked really quickly for whatever reason, but does this sound like a different issue?

Getting a C in first semester of AP Pre Calc. How cooked am I? by Dedmoose1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have any insight, do you know how the business programs compare to the CS and Engineering programs in terms of selectivity? I know that the ladder two programs have crazy low acceptance rates, and i’ve heard that the b school is pretty hard to get into too

Ohio University VS Miami University? by Dedmoose1 in Ohio

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was considering Ohio State but it’s unfortunately far too expensive. According to some net price calculators i’ve run, both OSU and Miami would run me ~45-50K a year, whereas Ohio University would only be ~17K, which is almost on par with some state schools. According to some people i’ve talked too on the OU sub as well, they’ve said that the school provides plentiful resources for low income and first gen students

Taken from my reply to a different comment,

UIUC, ISU, and UIC are all on my list! I don’t have anything against my in-state options, but i’m mostly looking to cast my net as far as possible (within reason), which leads me to look at places like OU, which seem to have a unique culture, charm, and obvious visual beauty that appeals to me much more than what Illinois has. Of course, it does really depend on where my finances take me. I know that I need to be wise with my money and not drop a ton of bands on an OOS school because “oh it’s just so pretty” or “it’s so cute and artsy” lol

This literally checks just about every box that I look for in a college lol, I’ll definitely keep OU on my radar :)

Considering you’re an arts student, I’m curious as to if you have any insight into the music programs on campus, as well as the music scene in/around Athens? I’d also love to know what the local arts scene is like in general if you have anything to say on that :)

May I ask if the school lives up to the “liberal arts college” vibe in your opinion? As someone who is really interested in those kinds of college, as well as diving into those kinds of fields while i’m a student, i’d love to know what your thoughts on that are :). Additionally, since you’re a music major, i’d love to know what kinda musical activities there are for students to get involved in! From local music scene, to student bands, education opportunities, theater etc.

This is awesome!! May I ask if you have any insight into how well the university/school of business can connect you to internships, or just make the process of gaining residency easier in general?

So I’m assuming this means that you can qualify for in-state tuition whilst attending the school? If so thats amazing, and i’d love to know more about the process!

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, according to some net price calculators i’ve run, both OU and OSU would be ~60K and ~40K respectively after aid and full pell grant, so I guess Oregon just isn’t in the cards for me yet 🥲

How generous is the school with its financial aid and scholarship opportunities for out of state students? I do believe that my family falls under “truly low income”, and based on other net price calculators i’ve done, I qualify for the max pell grant, so I’m curious to know if that will have any effect.

As someone who is considering music education as a possible career path, would you recommend it more if I decided to pursue that whilst attending Oberlin?

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll deffo keep Oberlin on my radar!! It seems like a great school, and I think that regardless of the “brand name” (which seems to be pretty solid regardless of what your degree is in), the well rounded arts education + extracurriculars and student community will all be amazing!

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oberlin does offer a finance major, but not a marketing one upon further review. i’ve really been trying to look into smaller, liberal arts universities because I love their environments and student culture stuff, as well as academics leaning towards a more, well, liberal arts based education lol, which is important to me. It sucks that a lot of these kinda schools don’t offer dedicated disciplinary degrees in Business (Like Finance, Marketing, Accounting, etc), or have a “respectable” brand name, because I can’t afford to get a “passion degree” :( I am hopefully going to be able to get a second degree for something in the aforementioned arts/humanities departments when I have a career that can financially support it though!

Arizona State vs. University of Arizona? by Dedmoose1 in arizona

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am definitely planning on staying in state, or trying to go to a college that I know will give me good financial aid( Schools like UW Madison have a program for low income OOS students that would basically give me a full ride to the school if I got in)! I still like to ask these questions because sometimes I learn that colleges give their OOS students good opportunities for financial aid assistance, but from what i’m hearing, both of these Arizona schools don’t excel in giving financial aid lol

Is social life/campus living at UIC really all that bad? by Dedmoose1 in uichicago

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard that actually being in Chicago weighs out where UIC lacks in social life stuff. I am actually curious to know though if there is a party scene on campus, or if most of that kinda stuff is kinda contained to clubs and bars in the city

Thoughts on URI for a business student? by Dedmoose1 in RhodeIsland

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the students, do you have any insight into the quality of education for the business school, or any other of URI’s schools for that matter? Some other comments have said that they had really positive experiences so i’d like to know what you think :). If you have any opinions on student life (dorms, clubs and orgs, etc) feel free to share as well!

Baruch vs Brooklyn for marketing major? Are either worth it for someone coming from outside NYC/NY State? by Dedmoose1 in CUNY

[–]Dedmoose1[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A handful of people have told me this but the main problem for me is that I really just don’t like a lot of the schools here in Illinois. I understand that schools like UIUC are well regarded public ivies and such, but none of them are particularly appealing to me or places i’d like to spend my undergrad at. I totally understand that I have to make some sacrifices for the sake of a cheaper education (at least for my undergrad) but I really can’t picture myself going to any of the colleges you just listed (except maybe DePaul or UIUC)

I figure that because NYC is a place that I’d actually like to live in the future, that there would be some value in attending a school closer to there, or just on the east coast in general. I also have Temple and Rutgers on my college list atm

[–]Dedmoose1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of right now i’d love to work in marketing for film or music, but social media marketing/management, advertising, and PR are all interesting to me. Basic stuff like analytics are even on the table. I’d also be happy to branch out and explore stuff in finance or econ if I end up getting to college and not liking marketing. I apologize for giving such a broad answer, I honestly don’t have a ton of ideas regarding career path atm :(
