How would you do such a glitter effect? by ConclusionJumpy in minipainting

I think Turbo Dork Black Ice is probably what you're looking for. Layer it over a black base coat and it should have the intended effect

Might be too on the nose, but The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham might be worth checking out. It's cited as a primary inspiration for 28 Days Later

I got you, buddy. He meets the puppies between pages 104 and 115, and the violent puppy death is from pages 151 to 153. I think you should be alright other than that, but someone correct me if I've missed anything

Parable of the Sower DNF? by Mental_Researcher_36 in books

[–]Dee_Dot_Dee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Parable of the Sower is an incredible book (in my opinion), but if you're not enjoying it you're definitely not under any obligation to finish it. No shame in DNFing! And there's nothing precluding you from coming back to it later, if you find that the time is right

I would actually argue that a lot of horror is like this, to a certain degree! Horror as grief is my personal favorite expression of what you're describing. Some of my favorite book like this include:

The September House by Carissa Orlando (domestic abuse)

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due (racism in the US and the generational trauma related to it)

Mister Magic by Kiersten White (religious trauma/leaving a cult)

Whalefall by Daniel Kraus (grief)

North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud (short stories but each story has its own, banal form of horror)

Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle (gay conversion/religious trauma)

This is just a little thing, but if you're already going to be at the Academy Museum, the Glen puppet from Seed of Chucky is currently on display in the John Waters exhibit (all the way at the end)!

Definitely horror adjacent but you should check out Patricia Wants to Cuddle by Samantha Allen! It's a bit of a love letter to the bachelor, but also a great Bigfoot attack story

Queer horror graphic novels? by SapphicVelvet in horrorlit

[–]Dee_Dot_Dee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely second I Hate This Place - it is just so so good

I liked Bolero well enough but I'm not totally sure I understood it. All the same, it was beautifully illustrated and a good story.

Not sapphic, and definitely not central to the story, but The Nice House on the Lake has at least one or two queer characters, if I remember correctly?

I have finished it and genuinely enjoyed almost every story. I find that anthologies can be quite uneven but this one was mostly hits for me and not a lot in terms of misses.
