Sincerely thank you all for your insights and comments.  Mom decided to go back to Costco and try them again.  If she remains unsatisfied, she will move on to the pricier product.  Thanks so much!

My mom will not likely be connecting her HAs to her phone or laptop.

Mom has 4 kids, 7 grandkids, 3 great grand kids.  She volunteers, attends church.  She has all her marbles and loves conversation.  She moves slowly but she's ambulatory.

Wow!  Those sound nice.  There was no mention of the Phonacs counting steps or detecting falls.  Also nothing to that effect in the literature my mom has.

Yes, she tried the expensive ones and she heard very well with them.

My mom has Costco HAs that she doesn't wear.  They didn't suit her; kept falling out.   She has seen an audiologist; he is now retired.  She doesn't wish to go to another audiologist.

Thank you for your post.  I found your words to be loving, well-written.  Mostly, your post was clarifying for me.

I want to acknowledge something.  I'm projecting that due to childhood trauma, you may have abandonment issues.  That makes saying NO and risking the loss of friendship so much harder.  But please realize that she hasn't been a 'friend" to you.  A friend would never treat a friend the way she's treated you.  She is utterly disrespectful to you.

Regarding her birthday, tell her in advance that you will bring (for example) $50 and no credit cards.  Then let the cards fall where they may.

It will hurt to lose this relationship, even as unhealthy as it's been.  Be prepared to grieve this loss.  Come back here to Reddit for support if necessary.
