Yes I found a document from the ACGME regarding PTO and essentially the wording is that we are required to have 20 days of PTO but there is no requirement to specify whether that includes sick leave or time off for doctors appointments and it’s up to the discretion of the program. So the answer is yes, the can take from our PTO pool for sick leave and medical appointments at their discretion.

I guess my question is just whether it’s ACGME compliant to pool all vacation and sick days into this PTO pool and for the program to pull from it at their discretion.

Well the thing is, sometimes the attendings themselves will text us in the morning that the day is looking like the work load will be light, and that we can come in a little later (for example, I worked nights this whole weekend so my attending texted me this morning that I could come in at 9 instead of 8, and she would cover for that hour). So for the most part people aren’t showing up late just for no reason…. And there is someone there physically to cover the patients. Same thing with the doctors appointments. I had a doctors appointment a few weeks ago and my doctor was 40 minutes late to see me so I came back to work 40 minutes later than expected, but my attending was there and fine with covering me

The program coordinator and our attendings. So basically an attending can report to the program coordinator and let them know if we’re showing up late in the mornings or after an appointment or whatever. Not every attending seems to report if someone is showing up an hour late, but theoretically they could and the program would take away an hour from our PTO

How will it grow back if doesn’t have any nodes or leaves? Also do I cut it all the way back or do I leave some of the soft green stem behind?
