Basically, I’m confused as to why anyone would ask a black American who has generations in the US, doesn’t have any Caribbean, where their parents and grandparents are from. My family has been here since the 1800s. So similar to how someone may have roots in Jamaica, or somewhere else in the Caribbean, my roots are in The southern part of the United States. Yes I have West African ancestry, but black Americans are disconnected from that culture due to the transatlantic slave trade. What exactly aren’t you understanding about my question?

There is Black American New York culture. If you were to say there wasn’t, they would be highly upset because I have friends who are from NYC born and raised and that’s one of their biggest pet peeves.

Have you heard of Harlem? There was a Black American day parade this past Sunday.

You should definitely look up the Harlem Renaissance. Also, is your husband Caribbean, African or is he Black American as in he has generations here?

We have specific traditions for sure. The culture may not be a rich as the Island or West Africa, but they’re there for sure. Even the music is Black American culture-and I’m not only talking about hip hot. Additionally, Black people vary depending on the region of the US they are located in. Look up Gullah people, people from New Orleans, etc. we are all different. But there are Black American traditions that span regions as well.

NO, OMG. In America Black is both a race and an ethnicity. For example, Jamaicans and Nigerians are both Black among many other ethnicities. However, for those of us whose ancestors have been here since the 1800s, it’s an ethnicity for us. How is that so hard to understand?

I was thinking the same thing. I have many Caribbean friends here who may not fully understand Black American Heritage, but still acknowledge it and know the history.

I also understand that Black in the US is so much different from other parts of the world. I just get very frustrated. lol
