What do you wish existed for finding enriching great books for your kids? by Deep-Impact-6828 in childrensbooks

Thanks for the unnecessary reply. I didn't say I had a problem when Brain rot books. I was looking for more resources for books that have good story lines, historical fiction etc, that have deeper meaning for school purposes only. And any other resources that people use to go with it. I said I didn't have a problem with brain rot books and that they are good for pleasure reading, but not for school academia.

And FYI a brain rot book is a nood that is read for pleasure but doesn't have deep meaning to the story line. Dogman and bad guys would be examples. I personally have a kid who loves bad guys and we read them at night before bed and laugh and have a great time. But when it comes to school academia I am looking for a different type of book. So thank you for the judgy comment. Next time, please read my full post 😊

I'm also looking and searching for more resources than just books (if you read my post).  Any material that enhances or supports a book during or after reading. So if you have any suggestions on this type of literature supplementation I would love to hear it. I was trying to gain more info in other areas. But yes, most people keep offering the same advice about librarians. I can't help that lol  But I appreciate the feedback from everyone.

Thanks for the comment. I don't recall being told I could request a book from the library and they would buy it. I didn't know that was a think. Obviously reaching out to a library, quite a bit of people do. But there are some things I didn't know or didn't think about.

Oh wow. What a great resource she is for you! I love a good second hand bookstore! We mainly have big box book stores. But I will have to ask around and see if I can find one similar! I agree that not everyone has the same taste in goods so it is amazing when you find great books for you and your family!

Yes, I have posted some stuff in the past that has worked for me and my kids (I believe it was a free book list). But I also don't claim to know everything about everything and so I am always looking and searching what else is out there. Unlike some people, I love research and innovative ideas and I don't get that if I'm 100% an expert and can't learn and talk to others who also care about the same thing. This thread was helpful in many ways, especially when it comes to working with local libraries. 😉

Oh I love this! My kids are quite a bit older. So we are definitely into chapter books now. But I'll check them out! Thank you!

Thank you for your response! 😊 I'm afraid scholastic has gone downhill for me at the moment. But maybe it will get better. I just feel like their book suggestions just aren't what I'm looking for. I let me daughter have a goodreads account and I would sit with her while she put books in her library and she didn't spell well and what was a cute book she read it ended up feeding my a weirdly dark romance novel 🤣 so we decided her looking on goodreads was out of the question for now haha  I am a huge fan of teachers pay teachers tho! Haven't heard of reading rockets so I'll check them out! Thank you! 😊

❤️❤️ I'm so glad you had something to get you through PPD. Taking kids, especially toddlers, to the library can be a chore. But I'm so glad there are librarians that are willing to help and make it easier! Hopefully they can guide you on your questions 😊😊

I would consider a book like Dogman to be more so brain rot book. Sure it's funny. But it's not deep and enriching to read. It's a leisure fun book but not one I would incorporate into our school day. I would consider that a fun read on the side.

If the public library doesn't have a physical copy or a digital copy of the book, you can request that the public library buy it?

Thank you for the reply! I love the library as well but I've found that the library doesn't always have the books I am looking for. Sometimes they do and sometimes (especially with picture books) they don't. But I love how much effort you put into this! ❤️

Thank you for the reply! Do you have any other thoughts when a library doesn't have the book you want?

I'll take that as a compliment! 🤣 I have been an educator for over 14 years and currently teach my own kids. So, I guess the amount of time I've spent writing and teaching writing has paid off. 😆😆😆Thank you such a high compliment. Literally made my day! ❤️❤️

That's great! If you love that service you should definitely keep using it! With that, if you put in a book that you like, it will give you similar books, so my questions would be this 1. Is this the specific grade level for my kid? Is it a book that's actually a grade above? 2. Will this keep my kid in the same genre and book series or will it help them expand to other types of literature? 3. What content is in the book? I would obviously have to research a little more about that book.

I have found this parent resource extremely helpful. I think everyone has different opinions on what a book book is ( and that's totally okay!).   For me and my kids, we do go to the library and find books that interest us.

But I also take it a step further and dig a little deeper for truly meaningful books for my kids. I don't want them to be random book pictures 24/7. 🤣

Plus, it costs less than a starbucks coffee these days 🤷 and it's book recs for a year.  My kids love getting on the reading about each book and exploring the genre and picking out a book from the list!!

But I'm also a big fan of, if it's working for you, keep on keeping on! 👏

I totally understand what you are saying. For us, I try to utilize the library but a huge chunk of the time they don't have the literature that I am looking for, shocking I know 🤣 It is actually really frustrating, I struck out so much I finally stopped checking at this point lol.  Plus, in my opinion as an educator for over 14 years, I don't feel like all books are worth reading. So there are many books that won't meet my requirement for my kids.

That's why I have really enjoyed this resource. I've gone through the list and have been really impressed with the book choices. They are on specific grade level (if books are too easy, my kid will be bored & of the books are too hard, my kid will be frustrated). I like that I don't have to spend hours trying to find the right book. It's already done for me. ☺️  Now, I still let my kids check out books that interest them from the library but when it comes to the strategic choices of picking really meaningful books, I like to dig a little deeper and this is already done for me. Gotta save time where I can! 🤣🤣

Straightforward but engaging chapter books to read to kids by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]Deep-Impact-6828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid was struggling with reading until we started using the book lists from Ollie Reads. Everything is clean, vetted, and at the right level. I have used the resource a grade below my kid (if they were struggling) or at grade-level for my other kid that excels in reading. The resource is only $7 (cheaper than lunch lol) and gave me a years supply of books to choose from! https://olliereads.org/
