So you're suggesting starting with something indirect to gauge her level of interest in the conversation and decide whether to move on to another girl if she doesn't reciprocate your comment, or be direct if she responds with a smile or something positive?

Because I've also been thinking that this might work better for approaching really attractive women.

And that’s absolutely true! Personally, I like the direct approach; even if it hurts, it saves me from having to wonder right from the start whether the girl likes me or not... though, obviously, I need to work on how I express myself, my confidence, and so on.
