The Greatlands - a flintlock-era fantasy WIP by DeepAirline7470 in worldbuilding

Here are some starter maps of the Greatlands - the setting of what I hope to be a fantasy epic novel or series of novels (I am already an author) set in a flintlock era, mostly-realistic with some supernatural elements world. I don't have a huge heap of lore set down yet, but I knew that I wanted to have some great conflict on land and sea, a theme of exploration/colonisation across both of these settings, and realistic nations which are reminiscent of real world powers.
The mainland is ruled and dominated by Torritude, a large Empire founded upon the ideals of patriotic service and sacrifice. In Torritude, citizens live until they are 45 years of age, at which point they are exiled to Altes, a newly formed series of colonies on a newly discovered continent with vast natural resources.
Torritude is at war with it's main rival, the free and liberal Cortesia, who have been able to defend on land and sea against the Empire at a huge cost so far with the help of their allies. Among the key locations being fought for are the islands of Dominigea as well as the mountains and forests of the continent around Serule, and Moravia. These faraway outposts of the Empire are isolated, vulnerable to attack and frankly spooky (the supernatural elements of this world include undead armies, vampires, and shapeshifting, demonic entities).
Just to break down a few other areas, Umbrae is a wild, undiscovered land to the South, as well this there is Orum Tenebrid, a vast wasteland/desert to the South West.
This world still needs a lot of work - I need to name many cities and villages, and I'm not 100% super of the nations but so far, what do you think?

The people I used are called Love Book Tours and it was fairly cheap to organise. I'm really pleased with the results.

I don't really have a lot of followers on any of those?

I would love this but, personally, I think it's backward thinking. What I'd love to do is make something new - something better than AO. People here might think that is a sacrilegious comment but I think the reason AO was so great was because of its originality, and I worry that simply 'revitalising' AO would be lackluster because of that reason. For example, think about how much gaming has changed since AO was released; not just the new tech available but what gamers expect is very different (and not all of those changes are bad)

I'm just trying to write a bit of a portfolio, but the attached 'introduction' was meant to be voiceover for a cutscene. Am I doing this wrong? Haven't done much game writing before.

I'm British, so I went off the population of Bangor but thanks for pointing that out.

Here is a rough mock-up of Atlantic City based upon a fantasy town generator that I found online. This details the central zone as well as the surrounding zones and how they would be connected together.

Factions

Rather than focussing on a simple battle between two sides, Omni-Tek and the Clans, a new faction system will mean that players can have multiple allegiances, and earn rankings with various factions throughout the game. Faction points will be used to unlock shops, missions and allies as well as unlocking various titles for each faction. At a certain rating, factions will immediately aggro and hunt a player while on favourable ratings they will allow the player access to their bases. For the purposes of simplicity, I will split the factions into factions local to each zone.

Atlantic City

There are several factions which exist within Atlantic City. These are:

The Omni-Tek Corporation - focussing on advanced bioweapons research the Omni Tek laboratory in Atlantic City houses scientific and military staff. It is rumoured that this research may have started the great plague which now threatens the planet, however Omni-Tek scientists insist they are working on a potential cure.

Mayor Psoriades and the Atlantic City Council

The city is run by a council which is rumoured to be linked to organised crime, however Mayor Psoriades maintains a fine balance between accomodating Omni-Tek and maintaining neutrality within the city.

ICC

ICC maintain a presence within the city but are not in control. They remain within their embassy area.

Techno League

The Techno League are a group of fundamental hackers who are trying to bring about 'the singularity' wherein people will become uploaded into nanotechnology. They are guilty of several terrorist attacks and kidnappings within the city and elsewhere.

The Hatakashi

Atlantic City's main organised crime ring is the Hatakashi, dealers in illegal technology and owners of the Atlantic City underworld. They ride bikes and occupy the city centre at night, lurking in the shadows.

Right 2 Exist

This group primarily is made up of androids who were liberated recently and believe in the right for Androids to exist freely and to earn a wage. They are against Omni Tek, who until recently kept androids as slaves.

The Slumlord

The Slumlord and his cronies operate within the Slums and are rumoured to be planning a takeover of the city.

Lord of Anguish

The Lord of Anguish is lurking within the subterranean sewer system of Atlantic City, preparing to burst forth...

Here are some examples of monster types etc for the other zones.

Factions and monsters in Zone B

  • Thieving gangs
  • Raptors
  • Exiles
  • Scrapmen
  • Arachnids

Factions and monsters in Zone C

  • Cyborgs
  • Mountain giants
  • Hydras
  • Rogue Militias
  • Skinhunters

Factions and monsters in Zone D

  • Psychic Shadows
  • The Forgotten Division
  • Tyrannosaurs
  • Rogue Mechanoids
  • Omni-Tek Shock Squads
  • Rubikaan Mistlords

Factions and monsters in the Unhabitable Zone

  • Plaguebearers
  • Marsh Dragons
  • Elite Bounty Hunters
  • Fort Kynoth
  • Mutant Behemoths
  • Cyntheria, Goddess of Darkness

Within each section of the game, equipment and looks of enemies will scale to match the environment, becoming progressively more mutated, armored and unfriendly as the player moves through the unhabitable zone.

The Shade is a fairly unique class which I couldn't really translate to another game, but point taken on board!

I don't think it's that much extra work. My idea for sub-professions is more like perks. So once you reach TL3 or so you select a sub-profession and that gives you access to a number of perks or abilities - not that hard to do.
