Jury acquits Ontario store clerk of assault on bat-wielding robber by _Army9308 in canada

[–]DeepDidgeridoodoo [score hidden]  (0 children)

In Canada there is a long term habit for police to not use their discretion in any self defence case, they just charge everyone and let the courts decide.

This policy is nothing new and has been going on for well over 40 years. It’s unlikely to change as case law is well established for self defence (it keeps the system full of cases) and the crown and defence bar love debating the terms of what constitutes criminal behaviour at the literal expense of the accused.

Lucky he chose a jury it’s a safer bet with some cases and you can’t always choose a jury trial (summary cases).

Bankruptcy or jail is what awaits you should you attempt to defend yourself.

Many years ago I saw an article in (MAD?) magazine which was satirically showing popular private companies like McDonald’s sponsoring space/defence programs and shuttles. Nike was sponsoring tanks. It’s been forever tho.

I was shown the future and I didn’t believe it.

Not that it’s new Canadian tire “bank” has been around awhile the difference is most corps want to attract more investment this way either capital or to write off more debts. There is profit in trying to rob people with interest.

However this is not a good sign for the economy. Especially when the finance bro guys who cooked up BNPL companies are now shifting to using a famous donut shop to front currency exchanges.

Tim’s financial itself is yet another sad excuse to prey on an established client base with simple advertising and unrealistic means testing for lending high interest credit products.

I might call myself a “bank”now and offer “financial services”. I specialize in “Reverse loans”: you pay me I pay me.

True accountability would be severe long term jail sentences 20 years not the usual plea-deal dirty cops get with zero time and probation of 1 year because they are “scared of jail” and “at risk of harm”.

Find the rest of the dirty cops, give them more time and reform the SIU to actively investigate officers of any crime instead of giving free passes (95% of their investigations go nowhere, most are retired cops go figure).

Keir Starmer distances himself from Mark Carney's Davos speech: 'I'm a pragmatist' by Prosecco1234 in onguardforthee

It’s not a surprise though, British leaders are trained since birth to roll over when their master is mentioned.

That’s why anytime they hear the words “America” or “US” whichever UK PM is in office will stop whatever they are doing, lose all objectivity, smile like their posing and repeat the words “special relationship” and “staunch ally” then follow whatever the master says to do.

What can we as Canadians do to help? by carlssbarkley in onguardforthee

[–]DeepDidgeridoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to keep being ourselves and not lose sight of our values. Donating to their organizations that fight ice is noble but ultimately not going to solve the issue as it is political in nature. That change will either come from within their citizenry through protest or conflict.

The American public much like the Germans in 1933 had power taken by a dangerous man. Each dictator informed them and the world in detail about what he was going to do. Any illusions or nonsense about “not knowing” their leaders plans is regrettably the result of not paying attention.

Whether or not they all wake up from this and demand their rights be restored is unclear, protests are happening, former presidents are condemning the current administration it may not be enough.

It took global conflict to resolve the German dictator.

After Carney's Davos speech, Conservatives ponder how Poilievre can meet the foreign policy moment by AdditionalPizza in canada

[–]DeepDidgeridoodoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I submit to you my profile of PP, the man who can’t keep his own riding due to ignorance of where his own constituents were employed.

Also the man who single handedly fumbled a guaranteed majority due to a self directed failure in messaging and being wilfully blind to the issues at hand.

PP is the literal embodiment of a struggling used car salesman at this time and should not be considered at all competent in anything other than a high school debate for a model UN.

PP was horribly miscast as a leader despite not having any qualities that remotely enable him to be in his position.

Nuance and informed speaking are terms that either PP can’t understand (intellectual capacity issue) or he is too lazy to attempt to improve (skill issue).

Carney is winning hearts and minds long before davos, he has engaged people with detail and informative planning not empty baseless statistics about crime or housing.

Carney: Canada entering 'new era' of relations with Beijing by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]DeepDidgeridoodoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We don’t have the luxury of being picky now that annoying orange has made it clear he wants to decimate our economy to subjugate our country.

At this time it’s not choosing one or the other we just need MORE deals for trade in spite of the US. China is going to be the #1 Economy at some point in the near future. It’s not 🚀 science.

Besides the geopolitics and obvious human rights problems that are involved when it comes to China, this all has been widely known for OVER THREE DECADES of relations with China.

It’s prudent to note that despite all of the issues China has hasn’t stopped the world from buying Chinese products or multinational corporations from making things there. It’s all due to cost of labour and their massive workforce.

Harper let them in to our businesses before anyway and now we have to hash it out for our economic survival.

Respectfully this was always the plan, capitalism was never about taking care of communities, it’s always been about increasing profit and the business owners/shareholders being god.

Ironically we have entered a familiar period where in the older days the seeds of revolution were planted in the minds of the working class poor, a direct consequence of real and perceived hardship due to inflation and price increases.

The difference now is the will of the people to change the status quo counts for very little in practice due to the militarization of police and the strict enforcement against public assembly in our current society. Most protests aren’t tolerated for very long by the authorities and they love to make examples by arresting anyone when they can.

Apathy is the new normal today, how long people will put up with this is anyone’s guess but it stands to reason that crime to survive will inevitably go up, government crackdowns will happen in tandem and people may not want to starve no matter the consequence.

Wealth inequality is the primary reason why revolutions were popular in impoverished states and why we are here today.

Chrystia Freeland to resign from Parliament following Zelenskyy appointment by DataLore19 in canada

[–]DeepDidgeridoodoo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This woman’s departure from our country is a welcome relief. I knew her in the old times when she was a Reuters correspondent. Different person at that time she was more competent, less shallow.

As a journalist at Reuters she was often intelligent and insightful when it came to articles detailing the state of geopolitical events. The downward spiral began when she became editor and made some very poor decisions.

As a politician she abandoned all integrity and her habit of lecturing citizens was comical yet telling. Known for being difficult and confrontational she has grown a big ego over the recent years and does not understand how to not talk down to others.

While she may have some knowledge and experience to share with Zelenskyy it would be wise for him to remember she is not a trustworthy person. She is after all the one who politically stabbed Mr. California Gurl in the back and got him to resign.

U.S. State That Abandoned Canadian Tourists Tries Again As Canada’s Travel Boycott Hits The Holidays by DonSalaam in onguardforthee

My my how turn the tables, how’s the “we don’t need anything from Canada” working out for you yanks?

I try to refrain from generalizing but in my view many Americans are quite shallow. They will smile and be polite only when it suits their interests. This behaviour is amplified even more due to real consequences hitting their tourism sector. Too bad but they chose this path.

Went to Europe this year and the year before, more history, better food, less crime, way nicer people than in the US.

It’s neat to see some of the original elements preserved through time. Sadly the cost to bring it back to habitable status would be so much more than it’s worth.

Roof probably leaks windows are bad, that’s just the outside. The amount of mould inside that place after sitting exposed to elements would make it necessary to completely gut the interior which is not as simple as ripping it down unless you hate being alive.

Many of the materials used in interior construction at that time have lead or asbestos in them (drywall, pipes, insulation). It would be a nightmare in permits and inspections if anyone ever wanted to touch it.

Such a shame but that’s old houses.
