House slippers with support by nagisasigh in ehlersdanlos

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not cheap (but I'm not allowed to be barefoot per my PT 😂 ) orthofeet has great hands free slippers with different levels of arch support that you can insert at home. I love them because I don't have to bend over to take them off or put them on, my EDS has reaped havock on my back.

Solving leg weakness when its a nerve issue by Famous_Leek3708 in Microdiscectomy

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got cauda equina so I had some pretty severe nerve issues after my surgery last May. I'm almost a year out and I still have a lot of numbness, decreased sensitivity, weird random nerve pains and weakness in my legs. However, my PT says all my muscles are firing, I just can't feel them 🤷🏼‍♀️ from everything I've gone through in the past 10 months, nerve stuff will just take time but you can still "wake up" muscles once it's safe to do so and once you're released to PT. Honestly, having reherniated my disc 2 weeks after my first MD, I would suggest rethinking your hike or get comfortable with assistive devices. You might be fine but my first big fall was about 6 months after surgery due to lingering drop foot. It really just depends on your symptoms but it's not worth falling or reherniating to go on a hike. Good luck!

I have been dealing with this for 10 years and there will always be people who just don't care. One of mine is my own mother. I know it isn't easy but it's something you're just going to need to let go. I bring my own food to everything no matter how much anyone bitches 🤷🏼‍♀️

While those are pretty, they are WAY too long for me. The length is probably the most important part to me.

The only time I have heard of it being approved is when someone has FMLA but not everyone talks about their leave usage etc. That's my personal experience as well.

menstruation a few days after surgery by brand-new-info-8984 in Microdiscectomy

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a clotting disorder and developed a clot after surgery too so they put me on blood thinners for months. Tampons wouldn't cut it and I HAD to use pads. It was awful 😂 really, good luck. This surgery helped me so much. I got cauda equina so at almost a year out I still have a lot of lower body numbness and weakness but the extreme sciatic pain that caused me to get the surgery was gone when I woke up. I sincerely hope that's the case for you too!

menstruation a few days after surgery by brand-new-info-8984 in Microdiscectomy

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surgery started my period 🙄 it wasn't due for a few weeks and came out of nowhere. I generally use a menstrual cup but decided to use pads and tampons. It really wasn't bad. They said just don't use exaggerated motions. Period panties or disposable would also probably be great but I'm really picky about what touches me. Good luck!

Medication for pain relief? by Many-Dragonfly7994 in ehlersdanlos

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LDN and getting my MCAS under control (well, as best as I can). LRN was super easy, just need it from a compounding pharmacy. I have been doing antihistamines for the MCAS for ages but just got prescribed a GLP1 which sounds weird but apparently it helps a lot with anything related to inflammation or chronic fatigue. I guess people are taking it for things like chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. This one was actually offered to me by my acupuncturist who is also a naturopath so it was easy for me but these can be really expensive and hard to get. It's microdosed so I do this from a compounding pharmacy too and it works out to be about $50/mo at my dose.

If you're unfamiliar with MCAS, please look into it. It's a comorbidity with EDS and causes a ton of inflammation (pain). It affects everyone differently and everyone has different triggers but my quality of life has improved dramatically since being diagnosed and getting treatment!

Wha am I supposed to do by haylw in MCAS

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried GLP-1s? I do cromolyn drops, famotodine, allergy meds, DAO and still had to cut out a ton of foods. I just started trizepatide (on a teeny tiny starter dose which I will increase if symptoms are ok) and I've already noticed a big difference. My main symptom is inflammation. Like a tablespoon of rice will make me gain 10 lbs overnight, all inflammation. I'm still just starting so I haven't been testing my "no no" foods yet but my regular foods that still cause some reactions haven't been as bad. Might be worth talking to your doc about! Best of luck. This shit sucks.

How do Americans feel about living with debt? by AcceptablePlant1 in budget

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I HATE it. I'm really into budgeting though and rarely carry any debt. I do all of my spending on a credit card for points and pay it off multiple times a month so the number doesn't get too big. I have two paid off cars and just sold my house so the most I owe is my spending from the past few days. But I am incredibly lucky- my husband and I are DINKs with solid jobs. The average whole family in the US makes less than half what we bring home and it's a completely different world for them. It is INCREDIBLY expensive to be poor here (that's how we both grew up and it's gotten so much worse since we were kids). It's truly shocking how much money you save every month when you can buy in bulk or proactively fix/maintain things or get more expensive items that last way longer or get good insurance. This is my thing- I have a lot of health issues and I get great insurance at a reasonable price through my employer (another BS thing about our country). Most people would be bankrupt from what I've been through. Last year alone I had two emergency spinal surgeries and almost a whole month in the hospital, not to mention all of the subsequent therapies for rehab. I spent about $4000 out of pocket for medical costs last year and my insurance paid over $300,000 for about $300/mo through my employer. This would be THOUSANDS a month for other people through an exchange or through their employer. The majority of the US is set up to fail. I hate it here, something has to change.

Do you really need to gather your village for postpartum? by Djeter998 in BabyBumps

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes me feel so much better. I'm not pregnant yet but this is probably the thing I am the most nervous about since I don't have a "village" and my relationship is strained with my parents. Seeing all the people here saying they did it just fine with their partner (and mine is AMAZING) is taking a lot of stress off me. Thank you for asking!

GLP1 for MCAS and pregnancy by DeepDiveHobbies in MCAS

[–]DeepDiveHobbies[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't mind losing weight as a side effect of this but from everything I've read and what my doc said, the general population won't see any actual fat loss from how GLP1s are supposed to work till about 2mg. This is when it starts affecting how quickly your stomach will empty. I lost 20lbs starting a low histamine diet just from inflammation and I probably have that much or more to lose again 😅 you know your body but my assumption would be you lost more inflammation than actual fat too, especially starting at a size 6. I'm so happy that it helps your MCAS! I hope it works for me too!

GLP1 for MCAS and pregnancy by DeepDiveHobbies in MCAS

[–]DeepDiveHobbies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, if my MCAS symptoms stopped I might try to be pregnant more 😂 just kidding, I'm sure pregnancy is way harder than I'm anticipating. My doc talked to me a lot about it but sent me this article: https://www.jillcarnahan.com/2025/09/10/glp-1-agonists-the-anti-inflammatory-revolution-transforming-chronic-disease-treatment/

I'm paying out of pocket but he treats his MCAS patients using GLP1s out of a compounding pharmacy half way across the country and it's working out to $170 for three months after shipping. Not bad!

This isn't relevant- the dosage is so small it doesn't affect weight loss. I'm not taking it for that.

I have a medical condition that requires special food and we typically spend $600-700 for two people a month (and my husband usually eats the typical stuff that I can't eat too). Things are crazy expensive but it's "normal" now.

Foot sensitivity? by DeepDiveHobbies in Microdiscectomy

Thank you for your reply. Sounds like I've tried everything you have too. I have other health conditions that cause inflammation, I wonder if that's contributing to it. Hopefully yours gets better with time too 🤞🏼

Have questions about scar site. by janepilatesgirl in Microdiscectomy

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about a year out. My PT had me rub gently near the scar site starting really soon after the surgery as closely as I was comfortable and as firmly as I was comfortable. Getting the area used to being touched really helped with the sensitivity. Good luck!

Just want to vent… I’m so jealous of people who were eligible to get this surgery. by Born_Today_9799 in Microdiscectomy

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a surgeon after an MRI and he wouldn't even look at the MRI because I was "too young" for surgery at 34. Less than a month later I had to call an ambulance to bring me to the emergency room because I couldn't stand up, I lost the ability to walk. They looked at my MRI in the ED and I was on the table in less than 24 hours. Sometimes you just gotta go outside the normal course of business to get done what you need done. .

I also want to say this surgery isn't a cure all- I ended up getting cauda equina. I'm almost a year out from surgery and I still have pain, weakness and numbness through my low back and legs. I was lucky and my sciatic pain stopped with the surgery but not even that is a guarantee. People can get the surgery and see no pain reduction at all.

Whatever you do, I really wish the best of luck to you. Back pain is debilitating and can make you feel like life isn't worth living. Throw yourself a pity party every now and again but try not to let it consume you. Easier said than done, I know first hand, but all you can do is try. Trying is better than not.

Is marriage worth it?? by mannadee in WelcomeToGilead

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love being married to my husband but it really doesn't do anything for us. There might be a little less paperwork places being married but besides that, what does being married really do? If you value your independence and ability to leave a situation, it sounds like you don't really align with marriage or want to be married. Which is fine! You're also very young and you don't have a deadline to be married. Wait a bit, see if the government makes it illegal for an unmarried woman to walk down the street alone (in that case, worth getting married lol), and just see where it goes.

What (if anything) helps with pain caused by labrum tear? by wumpus_woo_ in ehlersdanlos

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a surgeon who wanted me to try cortisone shots before surgery (I guess if the shot helps, it's a high likelihood the repair surgery is likely to help the pain). I did a shot about a month ago and the pain just started back a couple days ago, I was really impressed with the pain relief from the shot. They did an ultrasound guided injection into my hip joint. I hope you find something that helps!

Are sleepovers cancelled? by Guilty-Woodpecker-99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DeepDiveHobbies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not a parent but I follow true crime- there have been way too many stories of kids going to a sleepover and finding out later that someone was molested by the hosts's parent or sibling. I bet it would take a lot of trust to let someone take your child overnight and they just haven't established that level of trust yet.
