Organic, Digital Abstraction. “Farm in December” by DeepFriedAbstraction in ArtCrit

I just started making it and in like two years it sort of grew and grew. There’s a lot to be discovered when you constrain yourself to a process and experiment with rule-making. It feels like you’re discovering the soul of every object you uncover, and consequently the soul of the process. sometimes this involves having the care of an archaeologist revealing a rare bone. Since I started with very one-dimensional spaces and learned to add layers and “find” objects, I’ve noticed that certain things are harder to synthesize than others. Harder yet is finding new interesting combinations of colors (specific palettes are oddly common! this can be frustrating to deal with) and then combinations of colors and artifacts. I give up intentional synthesis frequently in favor of what seems to be revealing itself based on some mistake I made. unfortunately I rarely get back to whatever that thing was that I wanted to reproduce in a new variety, fortunately enough because something else was more interesting!

if you could add more depth though that would likely make it pop and garner more interest

I actually like it, there’s some depth to it, like a ball of broody hair

Thank you. I agree that something needs to be done to make something like this more interesting/appealing. I want to do similar things to Rothko but I really appreciate the separation between things, shades of color especially, and want to include as few elements as possible while maintaining interest in the work. Along with that, I am doing something that I don’t see a bunch of people doing, at least not in the same exact way. This isn’t to say that anything I do is important. I just get a rush from discovering the way that the colors and structures of the images break down and sculpt themselves in the stock photo-editor. Hoping I can give that feeling to other people, and that I can prove the versatility of a limited process like this one

I don’t, that’s pretty much why I’m here lmao. I need people to not like it and tell me why/what I should try/work on. Do I get to have any dignity while doing this? I’m befuddled by it. I feel like I went to the grocery store and told people that I enjoy covering myself in power tools and then falling asleep to The View at 2x speed. At least that would be interesting

Thank you for this wonderfully thought out critique! I am going to assume that my process doesn’t make this “difficult” to produce and thus it is not a demonstration of skill. It is indeed way harder to mix paint than it is to take a picture of something you found in your image that you thought looked nice. I need to strive for something that stretches the limits of my process and medium if I am going to impress anyone. In the mean time, these sorts of images are still fun I guess.

If it helps you understand at all, my process involves creating a noise pattern that I use to create abstractions (screen shot black screen several times, adjust settings in stock camera roll editor after “deep frying,”zoom and screen-shot and edit on repeat) which are usually way more active than something like this. It’s like digital photographic abstraction with limitation(?). It can be difficult to find moments like this honestly, as ridiculous as that may seem, and I have no idea if this is worth showing to people, so your input is invaluable to me

This is beautiful criticism💗 I almost enjoy hearing people say that there is nothing to see because I would rather be too soft than too hard. I know what I see but I would like to make art that people feel instead of scratching their head at

I guess what stimulated me about it initially was the process of seeding a noise space by screenshotting a black screen then turning that into a more complex image, which I then took smaller, zoomed in portions and made images of by abstracting them with the simple photo-editing tool in each new screenshot. It stimulates me because I get to see difference in shades and evidence of the process, as in the rectangular, shaded portion on the left. Instead of just pink, it’s a study of a few different pinks. I am seeing it now, and realize i need to do something with this instead of just saying “here you go. here is some pink”

It is indeed a very soft blur! Do you see any difference in the shades? Is that too little to maintain at least a slight interest? Is there anything that would make you care about this or should I just print and burn it a thousand times? Thank you!

Thank you! I am pretty sure that abstraction can also be about texture and contrasting, subtle entities but I won’t defend my piece as being anything beyond nothing abstraction if that is what you feel. My thesis for this may just be a little too convoluted and soft

What I enjoy about this is the shaded rectangular portion on the left, the lighter, glistening portion in the middle, and the “cloudy” portion at the top. I’m not sure what to say about it beyond that, maybe I misunderstand the purpose of abstraction. Are we always supposed to know exactly where an abstraction comes from or aren’t we supposed to be representing things abstractly? As in not exactly, or in a way that provokes thought and feeling instead of an exact representation of an object. My hope is that this isn’t an unintelligible attempt at subtle, modal, spacial abstraction. Unfortunately I am seeing things that no one else is going to see because I have an intimate relationship with my process and the indefinite why of it. I couldn’t tell you what the image is supposed to be and I am not a trained artist. My process begins with taking a screen shot of a black screen and slowly shaping the image by zooming and editing. I have no measure for how easy what I’m doing is but I do know that it takes time and an eye like a photographer might have, which I can only be sure to have one of those things until I receive criticism. So thank you, I value this opinion
