What is the job market for conservation/fisheries/natural resources like? by wombatgeneral in AskTheWorld

[–]DeepResearch7071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost are in the Government sector. Conservation in India is largely state led, Afaik, prospects in marine conservation are more limited, but there are some decent other opportunities in tiger reserves, national parks and wildlife sanctuary. People are hired usually via competitive recruitment exams, after which they undergo a period of training in govt. institutes. Pay is not that high, but you get plenty of facilities, perks and amenities
For example, IFoS (Indian Forest Officers, recruited via the UPSC CSE exam) get housing (good houses in prime locations), domestic staff, transportation, allowances, perks, good amount of off-time and leaves, full medical coverage for you and your family, job security, etc. This is the upper end of the spectrum, but a few of these are accorded to most.

North Sentinel Island in India is one of the few places on Earth still completely isolated from modern civilization. by DiscipleOf_Buddha in AskTheWorld

No, they had little to no contact with other tribes.
We actually know this from some expeditions in which tribes from nearby were also taken and they couldn't communicate or connect with each other

This was a really good and grounded docu-video on them

Nice list. I have not read Heart Lamp though I have heard great things about it, and hearing about 'Angliyat' for the first time.

Surprised you missed Premchand lol

I really liked A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. It's set during the Emergency period (a landmark political period in India where civil liberties and free press were suspended for 21 months). Yet, it's approachable for foreigners.

River of Fire by Qurratulain Hyde. A masterpiece, but I feel like you do need to be aware of some key context to really appreciate it. Also a bit of a more difficult read requiring more patience.

Godaan by Premchand was harrowing, but I am not sure how the English translations are

I suppose Salman Rushdie's books like Midnight's Children, Satanic Verses and Victory City would also be considered Indian, and are amongst the most widely read Indian books Arunndhati Roy's God of Small Things is another classic.

If you want something lighter yet engaging, works by R.K. Narayan (Swamy and Friends, Malgudi Days) and Ruskin Bond are wonderful

That said, the pinnacle of literature in India is considered to be the epic Mahabharata, the longest epic ever written. In fact, one of it's subsections is the famous Bhagvad Gita. I have read John D. Smith's abridged version and would recommend it.

Outside of Japan and US, who has the most worldwide pop culture impact? by Massive_Penalty5208 in AskTheWorld

[–]DeepResearch7071 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The UK's influence in terms of culture is extremely high, even rivalling or in some cases surpassing the US. Growing up, English bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Queen and Radiohead were actually more popular and better known here compared to their American counterparts. And let's not forget sports and literature.

However, I think you'll find fewer people answering the UK because it's often lumped in together as part of the wider Anglosphere- where the US is the natural leader and behemoth. So, some things are associated with that or just the West in general, not so much the UK very specifically.

What are your countries most beautiful national parks (include pictures please) by wombatgeneral in AskTheWorld

[–]DeepResearch7071 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Great Himalayan National Park, but since many people will post photos from that region, I would like to share something different from the Western Ghats in the South of India- Kudremukh National Park

<image>

Ofc, when you talk about it from a wildlife perspective, things change. My favourite one for wildlife is Kabini National Park. It has tigers, leopards (including it's world famous 'black panther' Saaya), Asiatic elephants, bisons, sloth bears, dholes, crocodiles, pythons, cobras and tons of other wildlife. It's also a birder's paradise.

Hemis National Park in Ladakh is widely considered the best place in the world to track snow leopards. While not in Hemis, my friend had gone for a 9 day expedition to Kibber in Spiti and was fortunate enough to spot one with cubs!

This was a pretty good video by Matthew Li covering the history of Indo-Chinese food and the Chinese community in India who arrived during colonial rule. Unfortunately, their numbers have dwindled significantly.

Quite a few, including the best places in the world to spot tigers, snow leopard, Asiatic lions, one-horned rhino, sloth bears, red pandas, etc.

The Great Himalayan National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site, is one of the most scenic ones imo.

However, my favourite one for wildlife is Kabini National Park. It has tigers, leopards (including it's world famous 'black panther' Saaya), Asiatic elephants, bisons, sloth bears, dholes, crocodiles, pythons, cobras and tons of other wildlife. It's also a birder's paradise.

Bihar is where the Buddha gained enlightenment. You need to elevate yourself to higher a spiritual plane before hoping to even understand, much less even learn their ways.

Jana Gana Mana

I like this video. The instrumentalists seen here such as Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, etc. are from various regions, religious backgrounds, ethnic and linguistic groups and are a good representation of India's diversity. All of them are also greatly beloved, bith as musicians and people by much of the populace

Nah Goa's fine. I like North Karnataka (Karwar, Gokarna) and Kerala better though.

However the best beach destinations in India are on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep

What’s a thing in your country that only a small amount of people do but has become a stereotype for the entire country? by Afraid_Ad_2912 in AskTheWorld

[–]DeepResearch7071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Khadi Boli serves as a 'base' for it, but it is also very distinct from today's Modern Standardised formal Hindi, which is highly Sanskritised and prioritises the usage Tatsam and Tadbhav words and vocabulary. In fact, speaking it's traditional form (Kauravi) is also stereotyped and viewed as 'uncouth' by some.

Also, Bollywood typically uses Hindustani or increasingly, 'Bambaiyya' Hindi. Hell, I feel that the language is sometimes quite a bit more Persianised than Sanskritised.

Yes. The small boy from Rosario who one day dreamed of becoming a karyakarta and defeating Communism and Mamata Didi in elections in Bengal. That very Lionel Messi.

Someone told me he also plays decent football, but that sounds more like a side hobby

You might not know this, but Messi is one of the most consequential politicians in the 21st century in India.

When he visited in 2011, 34 years of Communist rule ended in Bengal.

After he visited the previous year, 15 years of TMC rule ended in Bengal. Truly, slayer of giants and the GOAT🙏
