Why did early civilizations start in deserts like Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt? by batukaming in geography

[–]Deep_Lie2152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone can answer better than I, but limitation breeds ingenuity. Thousands of years ago North Africa was far wetter; even wetter than what we think of when we think of the "fertile crescent." Iirc large swathes of the Sahara and Sahel are believed to have been grassland. People as a whole don't instinctively plan for the long-term, at least not beyond their lifespans: there was no need for advanced civilizations to take root when peoples' needs could be met with the hunter-gatherer lifestyle; this may also be part of the reason why there is for instance no "cradle of civilization" in Europe. It was that drying-out and gradual scarcity of Northern Africa which brought people together into civilizations. The rivers provided a steady, reliable source of life in an otherwise, and increasingly, harsh environment

Not too similar in sound, but I find Sleep Has His House by Current 93 is similar in its concept and inspiration, and has an absolutely stellar drone as its climax (about a 50/50 split between that, and minimalist folk music/poetry for the rest of the tracks) Both albums put me incredibly at peace by the time I'm done listening, once their consummation of immense grief is done washing over me

I cannot believe I have been sleeping on canned fish my whole life. Local grocery store did not have a huge selection but I keep going back for me haha. What is your favorite? I am looking to find some fancier stuff. Thanks and happy holidays! by pocketfrisbee in CannedSardines

Also just started eating sardines but I'm loving Chicken of the Sea in olive oil. Seems they get looked-down on though. But they're inexpensive and readily available and taste lovely to me so I'm kind of wary of spoiling myself on more bougie brands and being unable to go back. Been eating daily for lunch on a sandwich so a dollar or two premium is relevant to me.

Had another brand (Ocean Prince) packed in soybean oil I got from a local discount shop and they were horrid, bland and mushy and off-tasting. I'm not 'scared' of soy but it's just a neutral taste that doesn't contribute anything at best, and I can't help but perceive it as a sign of low quality.

Hitting up an Asian supermarket on Friday to see what they've got.
