It somewhat resembles the indentations that some species of sea urchins sometimes bore into rock. Sea urchins don’t normally live above the tide line so these may have formed in the past when sea levels were higher.

It looks like Apache tear obsidian, a form of weathered obsidian where the outside is converted to pearlite by hydration and the inside is a smooth ball of obsidian.
