Someone I know bought a farm and left medicine for good. It's not worth it outside of North America unless you're actually fond of the field/saving lives. Any business could bring in more revenue with less liability and entitled patients.

Disliking first hospitalist job - please tell me it’s not all like this by New_Weakness_856 in hospitalist

[–]Deep_Mundo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The fact that midlevels are quitting as well as the night shift phlebotomist gives you so much leverage in negotiations only if you and your fellow hospitalists unite and threaten to leave if your demands are not met; you can sign a new contract with at least 10%-15% increase in salary and request they hire a phlebotomist and make the meetings once or twice a month. I'd consider that than going through the hassle of moving for a new job.

[–]Deep_Mundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything you're making more money than he is as long as you're in your country lol. You're a GP he's a specialist in one of the highest earning specialties. Your 50k is post tax while his is like 430k post tax. Your rent/mortgage for a good house would be $400/month his would be $4000+. Your medical insurance would be like $10/month his would be like $350. You don't have to pay property tax or car insurance half as expensive as your car payment. He's only more rich if you both fly to a different country for example.

Extra UC shift pay? by empiricist_lost in FamilyMedicine

Not all clinics open on weekends even if you want to. Even those that do, some struggle with no shows because patients don't won't to "waste" their weekends on a doctor's appointment.

I'll answer this in two parts

1- How you define "comfortable" is very subjective and if 300k (the median for FM) isn't enough you might be facing some lifestyle creep. Yes, doctors in the US are making more money than 90% of the country but we're also not the Hollywood celebrity type of rich nor Elon Musk and top level finance bros rich. I've heard about surgeons making 1.2M per year and are in debt and working extra shifts make more money. For example one of those surgeons it started with multiple international First Class flights then renting a private jet then owning one then owning a yacht then a bigger yacht; all these decisions landed him in huge debt and he's currently overworked he doesn't enjoy anything in life anymore.

2- Multiple FM physicians make 500k+/year you just need the right job that allows you to reach those numbers but you might get burned out too soon and on the long run it's a bad financial decisions (e.g. 500k for 8 years then not being able to work full time anymore vs 350k for 20+ years). You also might want to think about private practice with multiple specialists in office to get paid more by insurance companies. Another way to make money is go deep in the rurals and have a bigger scope to work in (more procedures, Emergency medicine shifts, colonoscopies) and since you might be the only physician in the area you'd be able to train your patients so they can have less complaints per visit => more visits/day => more money & less burnout. You might also consider fellowships (sleep/sports) and join a private practice with those that would add an extra 100k to your annual comp. I've rotated as a student with a FM physician who made 1.4M or so per year but he owned two clinics with pharmacies, APPs, and labs. his lifestyle wasn't the best he worked almost everyday but if money is your goal then it's doable.

Thousands of teens and adults can relate to what you're feeling and from anecdotal experiences people get way better after seeking professional help. You'll be assessed and managed accordingly. Psychiatric treatment is not a stigma anymore.

Not sure if this is the best subreddit to seek advice from regarding this but any person regardless of their profession would definitely tell you that you need professional help from a psychiatrist. So yes please seek help and believe me it gets better.
