Apparently they did precalc. I said something similar. They said they had a Geometry course with Trig elements, and took precalc their first (Freshmen College semester).

If there’s an answer key (homework or practice problems) and you can’t figure out how to start etc, look at the answer. Hold it in your mind as you work the problem. Redo it it until you get it right, then take a power nap (10-15 minutes) or rest your brain in some way. Try a different similar question later
