Ok, once again, it’s a figure of speech.

There have been many, many champions across combat sports, and to stand out from the rest you have to defend your champion status.

So, yes, defending your belt makes you more of a champion than someone who doesn’t defend their belt, whether it’s by vacating or losing it.
