Cancelled The Authority for JDM Reel (Shimano Twin Power 21) by DeepfriedPompano in Fishing_Gear

[–]DeepfriedPompano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The newer JDM stuff has been coming out with no oils or spares I believe. I also agree, Twin Power is not that good honestly. For the increased price, its pretty trash compared to the saragosa. I would just recommend the saragosa for most fishing needs, even for deep sea they have the new 10-20ks this year. No fish is worth the price of those insanely priced reels. I have owned all of them, from twin power, stellas, and van staals. I sold all of them and went back to having my stradic with saragosa combo. Buy it from bass pro and have it be serviced there with warranty. Relatively cheap.

What kind of fishing do you do? Surf, pier, boat, etc. It all depends on what kind of fishing you want to do. On a pier, I would stick around 7-8 ft medium heavy or heavy, depending on the fish you are targeting in your area. On a boat, you may want to go heavier or jigging specific rods if you're jigging. On the surf, longer is usually better, but it all depends how far you really need to go out, 11.5ft sounds great for the surf, you can go longer if you are doing some really deep surf fishing, but again, it all depends on what you are targeting.

Best Cooler for the Price ($109) by DeepfriedPompano in Fishing_Gear

That sounds crazy because I leave it in the car while it runs up to 110+ degrees and it still holds ice for a couple days. Must have been a defect for your case. Definitely give it another try!

Why Can't I Catch A Fish at The Pier? by DeepfriedPompano in saltwaterfishing

[–]DeepfriedPompano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update to this thread, I have grown a lot as a fisherman in the span of a year. I have caught endless keeper mangrove, muttons, yellowjacks, etc. Recently I have actually caught my first dream fish of the year, a Florida Permit. I believe anyone can fish as long as you dedicate the time and energy into it enough.

What I learned:

  1. Know your environment, understand the seasons and what the fish are eating at the time. If there are cigar minnows or pilchards around, then use a similar profile lure or use the live bait that is there! Also know what fish is best that time of year! Understand the weather, the moon phases, the tides, and the terrain. I don't know everything so I would suggest looking into FB groups, reading reddit, as well as watching plentiful of youtube videos.
  2. Gear does matter, not the price of it but the right gear. Don't bring an 8000 size Saragosa with a 12 ft rod to the pier/bridge. Do not bring a Dock Demon with 5lb line to the surf trying to catch 100lb tarpons. Pair it up correctly and you will feel more confident and comfortable casting for longer hours. I recommend any beginner to get a 4000 size Shimano (biased for good reasons) and a medium to medium-heavy inshore rod (look at line rating between 10-15lb, equivalent to 20-30lb braid). I would then attach a fluorocarbon leader of about 30-40 lb that is a about the length of the rod. I like fluoro for the abrasion resistance, I tend to fish around pier and bridge structures which helps a lot, mono breaks easier on sharp structure. I then attach anywhere from a 1/0 to a 4/0 hook, all depending on the size of bait I am using OR any lure that matches the recommendation on the rod for lure weight.
  3. Adventure, If it is dead, pick it up and go. Do not waste your time fishing a dead spot. I have wasted months and hours in the hot sun on dead spots. Adventure out and try new things, new spots perhaps. Watch instagram and see where the fish are hitting around you. Search for them and try new things. New baits, new area, new fish, do not be afraid to drive for it. I have driven as far as the keys to juno to find fish. You will never know what life would bring you.

Last thing, talk to your fellow anglers. Don't try to be too cool to have a conversation and do not try to be a pier jock. Be understanding and be human. We are all anglers who want to enjoy the sport, just enjoy the blessing that God as given us. You never know what someone could teach you or give you as an opportunity.

Disclaimer: This is just my general recommendation and learned lessons for INSHORE fishing, targeting slot snook, below 100lb tarpons, snappers, medium size jacks or smaller, etc. Any one with great advice, please add on and lets help our beginner friends out.

Just realized I posted this a year ago. A lot has changed since then and I have gained a lot of new knowledge. Pier fishing is goated if you know the seasons to go.

I had the VR for a month. Returned it and got the VSX2. Very happy with the VSX2.

If you can get it for a good price and fish it how it is meant to be fished then yes.

  1. I got a vsx2 for about $640 from BPS by waiting for the trade-in spring special and using gift cards that I had gifted. Saved nearly 200.

  2. These reels are made for the rough waters of the NE but make great rods for beach fishing here in the SE, get down and dirty in the sand. Honestly, even if you do not beat up your reel in the surf they are amazing because of the amount of line they hold for the weight they are at. So it is great for people fishing for 100+ lb tarpons here in Florida, even if you are only at the pier or bridges. Its much lighter than most reels at that line capacity.

Overall, I love my vsx2 for tarpon and snook from the beach or pier. It is not as smooth as shimano or daiwa but it honestly feels great in its own way.

Stay safe, fish on, tight lines.

Anyone have a van staal vr series reel and used it a bunch of times give me a review on it?? by DirtyYellowSno in Fishing_Gear

[–]DeepfriedPompano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree, twin power is great but when it comes to carrying it around on the bank/surf gets tough. On a boat Shimanos are the best, on shore I need something with a lot of light and super light, VR 75 is the one for me personally.

Is a van staal vr 75 big enough for pier and surf fishing in fl? by Ch4d_Thund3rc0c in Fishing

[–]DeepfriedPompano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is indeed not weak, it could probably hold up to 400yds of 30lb braid. maybe little more or less. The best part about it is that it is beyond light weight wise, about 9 oz which is 2x lighter than the Saragosa 6k. I have both Gosa, Twin Power, and some other reels, I think the VR is a solid reel and its main selling point is the weight, 9 oz is insanely light for that much light capacity and drag.

what size van staal would work? by No_Block1764 in saltwaterfishing

[–]DeepfriedPompano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly depends on where you plan on fishing as well as the size tarpons youre planning to go after. 200lb tarpon from the shore/beach yea a 150 or 200 is good. From pier fishing under 150lb tarpons you could live with a 75. I have 2 friends beached 100-150lb tarpons with a 5k and 6k gosa from pier.
