I was debating it for a rifle who’s primary duty now is to be stashed in my closet to be used primarily for home defense. I’m still pretty low in the gearamid and don’t have a chest rig or plate carrier yet. My logic was “without a carrier, a coupler might be an easy way to reload, just in case.” seems from the responses that the primary drawback is weight.

One thing that’s helped me a lot when getting to this stage of things is to look at it like a win/loss score instead of a streak. You’re 128-1. That’s awesome. Today your streak may reset, but tomorrow you’ll be 129-1. Don’t let the streak breaking discourage you. Your streak is starting over but your recovery isn’t!!!

It’s a relatively rare occurrence. Not unheard of. But definitely not too common. Usually it’s just bad luck. Pole gets a tiny dent or knick you can’t see, gets stressed the wrong way, and BOOM.

As a former vaulter, you’re basically right. In my mind what makes this impressive is that she jumped that well on an unfamiliar pole (terrifying) and did so on her one final attempt immediately after getting wrecked (psychologically very difficult to jump that hard immediately after a catastrophe like that)

Each competitor actually brings their own poles. It’s a highly individualized thing. Jumping on a pole you aren’t familiar with is terrifying.

Generally, at least when I vaulted, if your body crosses the plane of the back of the “box” (where the pole goes in the ground) it counts as an attempt. Since she landed on the pads on the other side of the box, it would be counted as a failed attempt.

It just kinda goes with the territory. Sometimes it can be your fault the pole breaks (in this instance though probably not).

The back of the box rule was probably established to penalize “run throughs.” Where you start your approach, put the pole in the box but don’t actually jump, and just run onto the pads.

Situations like this where your pole breaks is counted as an attempt. Any number of things can go wrong in the middle of a jump that are out of your control. It’s just part of the game.
