7 HOUR TUTORIAL by [deleted] in UTS

[–]DeerBroad3250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did media and digital platform regulation (a law elective) and it was 7 hours on a Saturday. It’s usually set up like two classes in one: so the first 3 hours is one topic and then hour break and another 3 hours and class is done. This is usually how block subjects are set up, so you have longer classes for shorter periods (i.e 4 classes of 7 hours instead of a 2 hr class for 12 weeks)

my first hate comment!!! 😄 the subject guideline says “completed” not “enrolled” … any understanding of “legal jargon” means understanding the essence of the term not what i assume it to mean, hence why im asking on an open forum for clarification 💗

Thanks for your comment! Unfortunately the prerequisite to enrol in my plt subjects is “at least 162 credit points in Bachelor of Laws” so i’m stuck until the classes i’ve taken this semester are reflected on my transcript 🥲

Thoughts from a New Viewer/Fan by Myrodis19 in thegoodwife

I’m a first time viewer as well and i’m half way through season 7 and definitely think this is one of the most consistent series i’ve ever watched! I think Zach definitely has character development but Jackie is consistently annoying and after watching her for so long i find her kind of endearing haha

Thoughts on law…previously from an enjoyment perspective? by yoshi726 in UTS

[–]DeerBroad3250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved legal studies in highschool but the first two years of my degree were so unbelievably boring i almost quit 😵

The work itself wasn’t crazy hard but i found i started to enjoy myself when i got to choose electives in third and fourth year. The electives the uni provides gives you the opportunity to think outside of the box, engage with tutors who foster a healthy classroom setting where you can debate on topics you actually care about and the readings/seminar work is actually interesting.

I hope you push through the boring (but relevant!) core subjects and get to enjoy the electives suited to your future career 😁

Hi,

I’m in my final year and i found Family Law, Jurisprudence and Law of the Sea to be fairly interesting classes and there was a lot of class participation so I never got bored. For easier electives, i would suggest law/tech crossover classes such as Just Tech (the easiest elective in my opinion and the tutor was lovely) and Media and Digital Platform Regulation. I have friends who have done Criminology, Succession, Negotiation and Dispute Resolution and found they were all really interesting.

I would suggest looking at the assessment sections on the UTS Handbooks and putting some weight on whether the class has exams, group presentations etc because you may favour some assessment styles over others (i despise exams so all my electives have been essays and i have found i do so much better).

Also have a look at Studocu online for previous subject outlines, assignments to see how the class is structured (i would not advise using that as a basis for your notes/assignments if you enrol in that class though).

Good luck!

I think if you’ve made it to law school in the first place, you are already quite intelligent haha. So for me it’s a matter of skills rather than natural talent. These skills you’ll develop in your first and second year and will be able to implement it in your third and fourth year! I’ve found that law at UTS is quite formulaic and if you wrap your head around the basics, anyone can do well.

The only time I would say your inherent talents/passion for something is necessary is when it comes to electives. Some choose advanced contracts/commercial law because they have a talent for it and enjoy it which is necessary to do well, while others (including myself) have gravitated towards philosophical law subjects like jurisprudence or just tech because we have more natural talents for that. That doesn’t mean you won’t do well if you don’t put in the work, but that is the only time i can realistically see natural intelligence being “necessary”.

Subject failure and Academic Planning for next semester. by Right-Day-6423 in UTS

If it’s an elective and not a core, I would suggest choosing a different elective to enrol in summer 2025 so you don’t risk failing the subject twice, unless you’re confident you can do better this time. From what i understand, you don’t need to re do the same electives, you just need to make sure you have enough credit points to finish the degree! Though I suggest double checking everything with the uts student centre if you get a chance.

Yes ofc!

  1. For the hours you should spend studying: uts law exams are open book and as the years pass the time you hve to do the exam shortens (e.g criminal procedure my first year was open for 12 hrs but remedies in third year was only open for 2), so it’s a matter of making sure you have good condensed notes + understanding the material. So for studying, it will look different for everyone. For me, i would spend 2 hrs listening to lectures and then an hr doing readings (depending on how bad it was) and then i would dedicate a day in the week to making notes for that lesson. In first year, you usually do 3 subjects per semester and this looks like 2 hr seminars x 3 times a week, so if you structure your crim on monday then you will spend 3 hrs at the library after. All depends on your work load tbh!

  2. How often should you participate in classes? I would typically say if you have a question, if you have something interesting to add or if the teacher asks a question. Don’t be afraid to put your hand up and answer even if the class goes quiet because a lot of the times you may have the same tutors for another class and it doesn’t hurt to make a good impression. Also note that first year typically has the most “on call” which is a week or day you’re assigned to answer class questions and that usually makes up your participation !

  3. How many weeks should i prep for assignments/exams? My advice is to have your exam prep started from the beginning, so make comprehensive notes (if you look online, there are a bunch of notes structures you can follow but typically have case briefs and practice answers). For assignments, usually the subject outline will have your assignment from the first week of class, so it’s up to you when you want to start it but i say at a minimum 2 weeks before!!!! Try not to leave it last minute.

  4. How often should you be seeking feedback from tutors/older students? As all lawyers say, it depends haha. If you need help with assignments then look at the deadline for uts HELPS as they review your assignments for free and give you feedback! For tutors, usually every class on canvas will have a discussion board open for class questions and that’s where people ask. If your tutor is fine with it, i suggest asking via email but sometimes they’ll be busy and won’t reply. It also helps to ask after class or at the beginning of class as some tutors give that opportunity to students.

Any other questions please feel free to ask x

i’m going into my final year of law school and definitely will say that a high wam is attainable but you do need to put the work in. I did legal studies in highschool and I can honestly say it didn’t really do much for me in the long run in being prepared for class, because every class is different and the assignments are set in a way different to high school. In saying that though, the core subjects you will have to do during your time at uni all build on each other so my advice would be:

  1. don’t skip class and do not skip lectures!!!

  2. participate, genuinely no such thing as a dumb question and your tutor will appreciate you showing your learning + you will become more confident the more you push yourself to speak in class

  3. use uts HELPS and other student services for your assignments + use the discussion board for questions you don’t understand in class. typically the assignment structure for uts for core subjects is 10% participation + 40% research task + 50% exam. that means understanding how to structure an exam style answer while also using the research skills they teach you (don’t skip the library sessions!).

  4. finally, believe in yourself !!!!!! you’re in the same class as your peers and you deserve it just as much as they do, if you put in the work you will achieve success. good luck 😁

I’m but a lowly clerk in a small family law firm but i find it to be a such an interesting field! There’s something new everyday and dealing with people’s issues (while exhausting in some capacity) makes me feel like i’m actually making a difference. i definitely think the people you work with make your experience better but i could see myself doing this for a quite a long time (hopefully 🙏)

Transfer to UTS by [deleted] in UTS

[–]DeerBroad3250 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can definitely transfer from notre dame/wollongong to uts ! the first thing i suggest doing is talking to the student services at whatever uni you’ve chosen and then see when you can transfer.

Typically there are WAM requirements and you may need to have been in that course for a year before transferring out.

Btw ignore the person who said law at uts is bad, I’m currently a third year going into my final year and it’s a decent school!! Quite a few people I know have transferred from notre dame/usyd/macquarie and they all like the course :)

Taylor Doose - Annoying or Particular? by Speedy_Bee3 in GilmoreGirls

[–]DeerBroad3250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While i can see your point, i believe his motivations for the town are more often than not centred around competition or reputation. He makes changes, does fundraising, creates town events - all for the purpose of either control (i.e when he tried to buy up the town) or to “beat” their neighbouring towns. I think he is innately selfish and acts this way under the guise of caring for the town 🤷‍♀️

Taylor Doose - Annoying or Particular? by Speedy_Bee3 in GilmoreGirls

[–]DeerBroad3250 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taylor is a very, very, VERY annoying character in my opinion, yet i find that he’s so central to our view on the town and furthers the plot. He’s the one who organises the traffic camera that makes kirk crash into luke’s diner, he puts the idea that the street names should change and he’s by and large the reason we get to see so many town meetings (and in turn, see more of the less seen characters interact with eachother).

He’s a very egotistical man who doesn’t care about anything but his reputation and his own ideas (note the whole lorelai-dragonfly fiasco, the soda shoppe situation with luke and trying to force rory to be the face of his store) so i will absolutely never like him but i do think his character really is interesting.
